In 1815, Napoleon was imprisoned and then exiled to the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean, 1,870 km from the west coast of Africa, where he died in 1821. In his first two months there, he lived in a pavilion on the Briars estate, where this picture was taken.
