Between 20,000-30,000 demonstrators converged on the White House on August 12, 2006 to protest Israel's bombing campaign in southern Lebanon and Palestine, as well as the current Administration's unwavering support of Israel's inhumane and disproportionate use of force in the region.
The demonstration was organized by the A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) Coalition, the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation and the National Council of Arab Americans. Speakers at the rally included, former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Mahdi Bray the Executive Director of the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, Dr. Mounzer Sleiman of the National Council of Arab Americans, Dr. Clovis Maksoud the Former ambassador from the Arab League to the U.N, Arab-American Anti Discrimination Committee (ADC) among others.
A contingent of about 40 members from the Virginia Antiwar Network (VAWN) attended the event, coming from Tidewater, Richmond, Aylett, Staunton and Waynesboro. The group marched behind the VAWN banner and held printed signs that read "Self-Determination for the Palestinian & Lebanese Peoples! Stop U.S. Support for Israel!"
There was a very strong show of support from /attendance by the Arab-American/Muslim community. It felt good to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Muslim brothers and sisters on that day.
