March on the White House (9/24/05)

Organized by United for Peace & Justice and the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, this protest event represented the largest demonstration against the U.S. military presence in Iraq since the war was (preemptively) initiated back in March 2003. Numbers of participants were estimated at between 100,000 to 300,000. After a rally on the Ellipse, demonstrators gathered along Constitution Avenue and took it to the White House. The first nine blocks of the march route (up to the White House) were packed so tightly that there was little forward movement, taking nearly 2 hours. Once reaching Pensylvania Avenue it became acutely clear what was producing the hold up. Most everyone wanted to take it to the President, many of whom feel that he and his Administration have disgraced this Nation and made it less (not more) safe for us and future generations.

Garrie -- my 16-year-old and my husband were at the march. they came home in an excited frame of mind. if so many people feel so strongly, maybe there is hope after all. thank you.

Sheila Jackson, I agree, the US Corp. Media sucks. However I herd a great bit of wisdom at the march. "Don't blame the media-Become the media" A gentel question kindly asked can often get someone to rethink stand of the war. Garrie Rouse is already ahead of us, as he has become the media.Thanks

Tom, I highly recommend that you become a PBase member and post your images on your own galleries. They have a free trail membership and it only costs $25/year if you decide to stay on. I've never seen so many people in one bunch in my life before and I was in DC for a demonstration two years ago. Yet, the media, the throne pretender and his minions and mouthpieces acted as if nothing was going on. We, as immense a crowd as we were, were almost non-existent as far as the media was concerned. Do we all have to engage in civil disobedience en-masse? Do we have to hit the streets every day? WHAT do we have to do? I am so totally disgusted with the Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly Fox and Fox-like farce that passes for "informed news service" in this country. I wonder what our critical mass is as far as breaking through the propaganda wall.

thanks for sharing these photos...my biggest wish is that Bush would stop the war and let everyone come home, enough is enough to many kids are being killed, Bush ships them over to Iraq and they never come home...i dont really know anyone that is serving in Iraq, but i still feel everyone should come home....end the war...

Dear Guest - I am not sure I understand your question. Who is blindly repeating "leave them alone and they'll go home?" American protesters? Iraqis? I doubt seriously that Iraqis believe that if they leave the American military alone our soldiers will come back home. If you mean the American protestors, I neither saw that statement at the demonstration (let along hear it "blindly repeated"), nor would it make sense to me if I did. Are the Iraqis not already at home? Are you implying that there are Iraqis here in the United States that will not go home?
