Washington, DC 1/18/03

This was not the first, but one of the largest anti-war protests in Washington (200,000 to 300,000)during the build up to war. It was a cold but sunny day with daybreak temperatures in the single digits and climbing only to about 24 deg.F. The rally occurred at the Mall, filed out onto Independence Avenue and had its final leg down M Street past the Naval Yard.

I wanted to get pictures which gave some concept of the size of the crowd but never got a very good vantage point (even after having climbed up on one of the bronze statues at the base of Capitol Hill). So I broke away from the rally early in order take pictures of the marchers as they filed onto Independence Avenue. I then pulled out onto a median strip in M Street near the end of the march to let the crowd pass me by. I stood there for 2 hours with throngs of people still streaming by and learned from others gathered at my perch that they were from Madison, Wisconsin. "Wisconsin!?!" I exclaimed. That is when they informed me that there were 17 buses from Madison, Wisoconsin alone. Who would have imagined ...
