dragonfly? *

Washington, DC

Following the demonstration, there were reports that dragonfly-like flying objects had been spotted. Observers stated they were like dragonflies, but clearly not. The Washington Post did a follow-up article titled "Dragonfly or Insect Spy? Scientists at Work on Robobugs" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/08/AR2007100801434.html ).

I did not see them while attending the rally and march on September 15th. Being an amateur dragongfly enthusiast (see http://www.pbase.com/garrie_rouse/dragonflies ) it would be the sort of thing I would take note of. Observers of the "dragonflies" reported spotting them both in the area of the rally at Lafayette Square, as well as at the base (west side) of the Capitol building.

Upon processing and review of the images I took that day, I came a across a number that captured small flying objects in the sky. All were from the area of the Capitol building. Only one of these images (this one), however, captured enough detail to make any kind of an assessment. The close-up shows it to definitely be a dragonfly (or a dragonfly look alike). I would guess from its size, body shape and height at which it is flying that it is a type of Darner. Or is it?
