support for Lt. Watada*

Norfolk, Virginia

On Nov. 15, 2006, two very special & gracious guests from Hawaii were welcomed to the humble 40'th Street Stage at 40th Street & Colley Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia. Norfolk is home of to the largest naval fleet in the world.

The guest speakers were Mr. and Mrs. Watada, who spoke on behalf of their 28 year-old son, U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada. Lt. Watada is the first commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to the war in Iraq. On June 22, 2006, Lt. Watada stated that he believes the war and occupation in Iraq are illegal, and thus participation in the war is also illegal.

Lt. Watada was charged with missing movement and contempt toward officials and, on August 24, the Article 32 (of the Military Code) pre-trial hearing investigator recommended a general court martial on all charges.

For the first time since 1965, the military is prosecuting an objector for his opinions. On September 15, conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman was added. If found guilty, Lt. Watada could face over eight years in prison - over six years for First Amendment speech alone.

In addition to the Watadas, several veterans, active military personnel, professors and peace activists spoke about the difficulties and hardships associated with this protracted, illegal and immoral war. Discussion following the presentations took a hard look at the common themes present in the Iraq war and other areas of instability and conflict throughout the Middle East.
