Leathery Rush

Fort Lee, Virginia

Rushes can be distinguished from sedges and grasses by having flowers with parts arranged much like the more showy flowers with which we are familiar. Note the brown, shiny capsule (fruit) surrounded by bract-like appendages that equate to the petals and sepals.
