I find these little aerial acrobats fascinating, and hang several feeders in the back yard. We mostly see broad-tailed hummers, which make a distinctive "trilling" sound as they fly, although rufous and black-chinned birds are also found locally. The return to SLC from wintering in Arizona or Mexico occurs about the first of May each year. In late July/early August, the young birds fledge, and activity around the feeders intensifies as the parents and young vie for territory. By mid/late-September, they all head South for warmer climates.
Hummers are very territorial, and an individual bird will chase others away from feeders/flowers within its "claim." All of my images are taken near feeders hanging from the rafters of our deck. Since 2005, with a Canon G6 + 1.75x teleconverter and external E-TTL flash.
