The Black Desert
On the 100 km journey from Bahariya south to the Oasis of Farafra the road traverses two major formations. The Black Desert and the White Desert, the latter a National Park. A greater contrast could not be imagined. The Black Desert is essentially mountainous black basalt, the White Desert a mass of towering wind eroded limestone of extraordinary surreality.
The basalt as usual takes its toll of tires and the large boulders strewing the paths make walking a hazard, climbing up through the plateau.
Panorama is almost the sole way to image this enormous landscape and several have been included.
I've only just seen these, Waz. Fabulously atmospheric photos which bring it all back to me....wishing I was there still, or could return to the magic that is the Western Desert of Egypt! Much love, CLAIRE
