| Anything to do with medieval and renaissance reenactment, faires, Markland, SCA or Pennsic can be found here.
I think the broad allure in looking to experience varying aspects of the past is not only to compare the logistics of how our ancestors lived (I have certainly come to appreciate carpenters, tailors, engineers, architects and artists of the ancient world in an age before modern comforts like electricity) but also to experience the very basic nature of what makes us all human. Being under the sky around a campfire for weeks with nothing but the company of your fellow man to entertain you certainly puts into perspective the good and bad of our modern world, and just how much we actually need to live fulfilling lives. My love of living history started out as a hobby when I followed some friends in the fall of 1998 to a local Markland group meeting at my college. I knew barely anything about it nor did I have any particular interest in history. Little did I know that my experiences in Markland, many faires, weekend wars, feasts and battles would eventually become a major passion of my life. Making many good friends, getting hooked on Pennsic, becoming somewhat of a Japanophile, starting my own living history-related business, and a deeper appreciation for the world and just how far we have come in it, have been the many fruits of this passion. |
