Galls on plants

Galls are made on just about every plant, on leaves, stems, roots, buds, flowers. A variety of insects make these galls (but not all galls are made by insects), but the most common are made by gall midges (Cecidomyiidae), gall-making wasps (Cynipidae), and gall-making aphids (Pemphigidae). Galls have different shapes and can look like flowers, balls, bulges, growths, black spots, etc. The gallery below shows some of the galls we have found around the FWG, but there are many, many other galls that occur, not found at the FWG. And there are many galls at the FWG that we've not found yet.

Apart from anything else, I find most galls to be very beautiful, particularly the goldenrod galls which can attain an almost sculptural quality.
