Our Butterfly Meadow was created over the period of several years in the early to mid 1990's. About three years ago (2006), we decided to extend the meadow by adding adjacent areas to it. This involved a lot of work and it is still ongoing, but the changes already have been profound.

In 2011, we added a small Monarch Waystation with funding from the Evergreen Foundation. Later in the year, we discovered we'd been awarded further funds for a much enlarged Monarch Waystation. At present (2012), the Butterfly Meadow is undergoing even greater expansion with thousands of flowers planted, including of course, milkweeds, to attract monarchs and other butterflies.

The meadow is planted with a mix of native and non-native species. We prefer native species, but when a non-native (and non-invasive) plant has been shown to provide either nectar or larval food for butterflies, and to be a magnet for butterflies, we will include it.
