Tangier Island is a small island located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, USA. It was first settled in the early 1600's. To this day it is still an active fishing community and provides most of the Soft Shell crabs to resturants in the Eastern USA.
Sadly the future of this island and its unique inhabitants is under attack. The American Saltwater Sportsfishing Association are lobbying and wooing politicians to close the island down and end almost 350 years of unique tradition. If they succeed in this wrongful attack, most of the islands inhabitants will have nowhere to go and no skills to apply to a new job. To add insult to injury the waterman (crab fisherman) on the island are being blamed for crab depletion in the bay. As a biologist, I can assure that the true culprit for depletion is due to garbage pollution, and also to nitrogen posioning from over use of fertilizers used in farming and households washing off into the bay.

I encourage all interested parties to visit this wonderful place if you ever get a chance. I also want to encourage people to voice their support for this unique community.
