I've been wanting to take the School of Rock shot to the next level for a few days now. I knew it was going to involve colored gels, but wasn't sure how to pull it off. I brought up some stands and strobes this afternoon and did about 40 test shots with Ian just simply standing in place without the guitar. I tried different gels, snoots, power settings...etc, you name it. Couldn't quite get the look I was after. So, I figure what the hell, I have Ian take his shirt off and grabbed the guitar. I figure I might get lucky in one of the shots and at least I might have something to work with.
Just then my phone rings...it's the wife. She is on her way home and wants to know if Ian would like to make a quick trip to the store with her. He says yes. Ok, this gives us about 10 minutes to grab some shots before she gets home. Nope, she's in the driveway waiting for him. So, I grab this one frame and he's got his shirt back on and grabbing his shoes and coat. It's not bad, but still different from my vision. I will have to follow up and make a part three of this series.
Green gelled Sunpak to camera left and firing at his face. Blue gelled Sunpak to camera right and fired to rim light him from the back. I got the added bonus on a streak of light thru the top part of the frame, but I would have preferred it was firing more downward. The last Sunpak is on camera firing at the wall to camera left with a red gel on it.
