Coachwhip

Spotted him on the road just south of Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California.
When I tried to pick him up I was amazed how quickly these snakes can move.
I was never able to get closer than this photo suggests.

Great shot. I like the way the snake blends in with the background. Coachwhips are rather high strung and not so friendly, so it was probably good that you didn't catch it. Voted.
