Midway Atoll has approximately 1/2 million breeding pairs of Laysan albatross. The Laysan is smaller than the black-footed albatross and less aggressive. They are a curious species. If you sit in a field of them, eventually one will walk up to you and nibble at your clothes - 'taste you', like how a baby tests objects by putting them in their mouths. I used to love putting my hand out (with a glove on) and letting the albatross 'nibble' on my finger - very special. The Laysan appear semi-tame. They like their personal space, but again they will quite happily walk past your feet, without paying much attention to you.
