Spider Rock

Caynon de Chelly

This shot was taken from the rim of Canyon de Chelly. Spider Rock is almost 900 feet high and 40 feet wide. When we first went out at 6:30 am in April to shoot, it was 28 degrees and a 30 mph wind and snowing. After going back for breakfast, the snow had stopped and was quickly melting.

Canon Elan 2e with Sigma 17 to 35 wide angle lens full exif

If I rember correctly - Indian ledgend has it that a giant spider would kill it's prey and take it to the top of this rock to eat it. Since (when the snow is not there) top of the spire appears to be white all the time, this white is due to the bones that the spider left there after eating. I am sure you never would have figured out the reason for this name on your own ;-)

How did it get the name, Fred? Unless it’s because only a spider could climb it!
