This is probably not the right place for this comment, but it is within 6 inches. For what ever reason, Honda shipped most of the bikes in the first few years of the GL 1800s with the nuts so tight or loc tited, that the brass stud rips out of the taillight housing, making it impossible to remove the taillight housing as they recommend to change the bulbs in the trunk. I finally had a bulb burn out at 180,000 and sure enough could not remove the nuts. It is possible to access the bulbs by removing the snap cover on the bottom half of the taillight pocket in the trunk. There is a hefty tab at the top center of this cover that must be pushed down with a wide blade screw driver to get it loose. There is a small tab on the inboard side also. This cover is trapped by the wires and will not come all the way out of the trunk, but it is better than ruining the housing. I did not try it, but I would guess that if you ripped the studs out, they could be epoxied back in.
I better look at the alignment bumps. One thing about always pulling a trailer, I do not have to be so neat in packing the trunk. I am ashamed to show anyone in my trunk.

I stuck 1/4" plastic tubing inside of the rubber seal. Works great to prevent heavy drops of the lid.

yes I feel we all who own a GL1800 knows about this big problem, I have been putting velcro strips on the tabs, this slows it down for awile. I have seen a number of bikes with the paint chipped around the lid already. I would think that HONDA should make this good and stand behind there work. They need to use heaver hinges, the lid is just to heavy.Do you have an answer to this problem?? the dealers that I have talked to just wish it would go away.the paint seems to be another problem,I have seen quite a few with problems
