You have some great information for the C14. I had a 2002 C10, and bought the C14 4 days ago.

Where can I buy a set of the highway pegs? Do you make them for resale?

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the GL 1800 DVD's, they inspire confidence. Did the All Balls bearings this winter, found a broken spring and a frozed anti dive in my forks. Bike rides great after the upgrades. My wife says you saved her the price of a new motorcycle.

Need to change one of my high beam bulbs-right side, throttle side. You covered the low beam replacement, can I find high beam suggestions in my current DVD set? The Honda maintenance manual says to remove the faring. Suggestions? Thanks again.

Hello Fred. I'm looking at Givi V46NT lighting and saw your original posts on your project and kit from years ago on advrider . I realize that Admore lighting has a product for the V46 now, but I'm wondering if you still have any kits available? Hope to hear back from you.

Hi Fred,
I have a 03 GL1800 that just turned 100,000 miles last mo while on a 6,000 trip from CT to MT and back. Love that Beartooth Highway...I received your maintenance video for x-mas last year. What a great tool. Everyone that has a GL1800 should have your video...
Thanks,

Hi Fred

I own an 08 1400GTR and have purchased your wonderful maintenance videos awsome.

I took the bike out for a ride on the weekend and accidently hit a rock which dented one of the header pipes fortunately no other damage. The dent is about 2" long and 1/2" deep would this cause any adverse effect to the bike or can I just leave it and keep riding?

I stalk the Concours site regularly and always read your posts with interest.

Hi Fred, thanks for these pages - Great Site! Regarding brake pedal line fluid bleed whereby you did not manage to get it through antidive bleed nipple, the workshop manual states 'NOTE THAT YOU MAY FEEL STRONG RESISTANCE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL DURING PUMPING TO BLED AIR FROM THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER. THIS SYMPTOM IS CAUSED BY THE DELAY VALVE FUNCTION. BE SURE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL FULLY DOWN TO THE BOTTOM'
I've further read that bleeding cannot be achieved without reverting to the 'manual method' so with the full lever travel (as described above) and recomendation of manual bleeding, this may be the reason why your anti dive did not bleed any fluid?
I'm about to do mine for the first time this week, will let you know!!

Hi Fred,
Got the DVD's and love 'em. I recently flushed my clutch line(twice, because of what follows)being very careful to follow the DVD especially keeping the reservoir filled. When finished I notice a "squishy" sound when pulling in the lever focused cheifly near the engine. To me it sounds like the sound I'd expect if air was present w/ a liquid. The sound may have been there prior to the servicing, never thot to listen. Went to the Honda dealership and listened on a brand new GW and it was silent. Maybe it's just a sound that eventually and normally occurs (22K on it)? No air was seen in the Mighty Vac tubing either time I flushed it.
Thanks, Dick

Fred,
I was wondering if you've ever encountered a problem with getting the tire on a front rim to seat? It's happened to me on numerous occasions and each time I've had to take it to a local tire place and they do it in minutes. I've tried ratchet straps, hammers, pounding the wheel on the floor and nothing seems to work. I've thought about trying the ether trick but didn't have any recently. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Fred

I recently installed some centramatic wheel balancers and new brake pads and I used you videos to help me with the tire removal and brakes. Thanks for the step by step info. I have a question about the rotor clearance. My clearance seems very slim on one side of the left front caliper. You had a similar problem in the video and took care of it by "loosening the pinch bolts and moving the left fork out". If you do this doesn't that move the fork off of the alignment ring on the axel? Also, I could not find where this procedure is in the manual - you said that the clearance should be .28 inches on either side should that be milimeters - the entire caliper gap doesn't seem to be more than .28 inches? I would say I have 1 - 2 milimeters clearance on one side of the caliper do you think that is enough?

Thanks Dave

I followed your fork oil change for the 1800 and when i removed the oil drain bolts the long bolt came out fine with washer intact. But the shorter bolt came out very hard all the way and the washer was not there. The bolt had something that looked like pipe dope on the threads, it did not look like loc thight. I looked in the oil and in the bottom of the fork clamp but cannot find it anywhere. I installed the longer bolt and washer then decided to replace the shorter bolt to see if the washer was still in the fork. The bolt will not install, it goes in the hole but will not thread. Have you heard of this problem?

Hi Fred:

First, thank you for posting details about fork rebuilding for the GL1800...it helped immensely!

I have a headlight modulator wired into the LOW beam on my 2002 GL1800, but would like to rewire it to HIGH beam.

Question: Would you consider providing information about how to wire a headlight modulator into the HIGH beam circuits?

Thanks!

Hi Fred. I am building a 3 wheel electric vehicle that will use a GL1800 swingarm with ther adjustable shock. I have the swingarm and adjustable shock but was wondering if you could tell me what the plastic lever part interfaces to from the compressor's worm gear/piston mechanism? I assume it connects to a controller to denote the position and limit the max and min position of the compressor piston. Is that correct? Thanks.

I have a 1995 GL1500 Aspencade. Idle used to be irregular but was better this year. During my trip to the B.C. Rockies I got caught in heavy rain. Two days later I am getting a strong gas smell. The vent hose for the gas cap can be blown through but when I remove the gas cap I get a whoosh sound. The gas smell is very strong. I don't think mileage has been affected. Is my gas cap done or do you suspect something else?

Fred Keep up the good work. I have 2002 Gold Wing. I have been having trouble with my CB for as long as I have had it. I brought it new in 2003. I would say that 75 per cent of the time that I key up I get a bad squeal. I was at the Ohio District GWRRA Rally this pass week end. I spoke with the guys at Sierra Electronics about my problem. They informed me that early 1800 Gold Wings had bad radios in them that caused problems with the CB. They also said that Honda Had issued a bulletin to it dealers about this problem and said that this should be covered under warranty. Do you know anything about this problem. Any information on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Fred, Larry Smith

I am reading an old review you did on the Autocom system back in 06. I have one and have been using it primarily for passenger, cell phone and GPS hook ups.

I am now part of a group that would like to go Bike to Bike with comms and most of them are using the chatter box system. I know the autocom is capable of bike to bike with a FRS radio and where to plug it in. I have even bought the 4 pin special plug for a radio. My problem is finding a radio that works.

I call Autocom and they try and sell me the super expensive one they offer. I am looking for a cheaper motorolla or any other brand that will work. Any suggestions? I have tried 2 brands and 3 different types. The stores are getting tired of me returning the product cause it dont work for me. If you have any suggestions as to a radio you or your friend is using I would be most grateful.

Thanks
Steve

My 2002 GL has been trouble free for the most part. But yesterday, I found that the headlights didn't turn on with the key. And then, in trying a quick trouble shoot, I tried the flasher button to see if it worked. Now it won't turn off. So, I rode home in the dark with my fog lights and four ways flashing! Anybody had that problem...if so...what's the cure?

Fred, great site! I recently purchased a 2003 Goldwing. I did not know about the frame weld problem. The dealer had said all the recalls on it were up to date. Do you have an idea as to what percentage of bikes have the issue? Mine was manufactured 5/02. I saw something about a mark in the corner of the vin plate. I have a mark after the vin number, (different location?) I plan on towing a trailer. Is there anyway to tell by looking if the mod was done on my bike? Is it just a case of seeing that the welds look beefier? Thanks for your input.

MECHANICASE 24-Nov-2008 12:10
Hi, On my Gl1800, while it was setting idling with the cruise control on/off button pushed in (engaged), my son also pushed in on the reverse push button switch. Now both of these buttons are stuck in to the on position, and I cant get ether button to release back out. The bike cant be rolled in ether direction, and when you turn the key on the reverse light glows and also the cruise engaged light glows, but the bike wont engage the starter. Is there a common between the cruise switch and the reverse switch that they both locked in at the same time??? Also the gear shift lever is locked so you cant change to any other gears.....Do you have any ideas???? Thanks in advance for any help at all.

Hello Fred,
I live in the NW Valley area of Phoenix, AZ. Like you, I own an 08' Concours14. Around 4500 miles the KiPass started to fail. Actually it would not activate when the outdoor temp would reach 100'F+. Started out intermittenly then all the time at high temps usually after a morning run up the mountains. Didn't matter if the bike was in the shade or Sun. It got to the point that I would leave the bike running during fuel stops.
I took the bike to Metro Motorsports in Pioria, AZ.
They took 3 weeks to fix it. Said that they replaced the ignition module. They reprogrammed the FOB(s).
Metro said that Kawasaki gave them a hard time and said "that this never happened before". At first the Kaw service rep refused to authorize warranty work.
Anyway, it's now fixed and is still OK after close to 2000 miles.
Have you heard of or have you had any problems with your KIPASS?
Sure would appreciate a follow-up from you.
Thanks, Mike

Hello Fred,
I live in the NW Valley area of Phoenix, AZ.
Anyway, it's now fixed and is still OK after close to 2000 miles.

how to change high beam bulbs?
Tom Ryan 11-Aug-2008 19:50
Fred,
I have an 01 GL1800 that blew the left fork seal. I'm in the process of changing them. I think I may have a problem with the anti dive. I think the o-ring went bad, seized the anti dive and blew out the seal. Where can I get the AD replaced or rebuilt? Also, why do you add the .035" shim under the bleeder screw/
Thanks,
Tom Ryan

Fred, I bought your 16 repair DVDs lasr year. I have a 2007 Goldwing with comfort package, Nav and airbag. The problem that I am having is my grip heaters nor seat heaters do not work since my last trip up north. I brought the wing in for warrenty serce on this item but was told that I would have to pay $250 because I installed a trailer hitch and this interfers with the removal of the left saddle bag, (they need to remove to access the heater control unit. Anyway i told them that I would trouble shoot it myself (I also have a 200u7 service manual). My question is do you know of any way to access the heater control unit without removing the left saddle bag? I suspect I have a bad grip heater b ut on my model the connector is located in back of the right radiator. I also would like to know if you are going to produce a dvd on the airbag model, There is a lot of differences. I enjoy your DVDs and would apreciate if you let me know when updated ones are availible.

Hi Fred, I read many of your informative tech notes in the early days of the GL1800 Riders wbe site. I finally seem to have come to an impass of my own. and I hope you can help. The speakers don't work on my 01 GL1800. I have run all of the tests listed in the 1800EPSS manual, and have located only one failure, from which I do not know how to procede. The last test "Starter/Reverse Switch Line" should show battery volage from the yellow/red wire to ground when the reverse switch is engaged, but shows ~50mV on my meter.
This suggest an open circuit, short circuit or a "poor" contact in related connectors. I have no schematic and no idea how to procede, other than to deal with the unscrupulous local Honda dealer.
Thanks verymuch for your time.

Hi Fred. Love you DVDs, but have a question about Traxxion. Trying to decide if I can save some money and just go with the fork upgrade to include All-Balls and Brace. Based upon my riding stype trying to determine how much return on investment I will get for the extra $900 to upgrade the rear.

My stle
- ride very agressively and do scape some parts
- ride one-up and weigh 170lb
- 70 series tire so already have some additional ground clearance

Thanks

I have a rear speaker kit from Wingstuff that I am trying to install in my 02' Goldwing. The instructions are VERY vague! (Can anyone suggest where I would find some detailed step by step instructions?) Or, if someone could call me at 425 883-6351, I would REALLY approciate the help....

A couple of questions I have are:

1. It talks about separating the inner speaker box from the outer speaker box with 3 screws. First of all, I can only find two. Second, it looks as though the only place to mount the speaker is onto the inner piece anyway and it makes no sense to try and separate the box, even if I could find all 3 screws.

2. Drilling a 3/8" hole. Why does it say to do this? Again the instructions are very vague

3. Routing of the speaker wires. (The instructions are very vague once again.) I have the seat removed and it looks to me that the wires should run up to the speakers on each side, behind the pockets and then up through the existing hole into the speaker box. I am concerned though, that the wires will somehow be pinched by the hinges.

Got a puzzler Mr. Harmon, may I bounce it off you? Been blowing a 15 amp fuse(Ign/cruise) and this causes alternator to NOT provide power to my battery.Result...battery runs bike till it runs out of power. Problem is prevented by not pressing the cruise button. Bike runs fine but I can't use my cruise. Any ideas?

Afternoon Fred,
I bought your GL1800 Video Maint. set some time ago. Well, the other day I was reviewing something, I forget what, and I noticed you snap of this amber cover from your running lights and you mentioned Cee Bailey's. Well, I have never been a fan of EC's little quick fix set screw cover so I immediately ordered a pair. Question: Dod you upgrade the velcro. I really don't trust the little coin circles that came with the Cee Bailey's. Any suggestions? Thanks and couldn't live without your Video's. Worth every dime and more...

Hello My Good Friend,

My name is Mr.Frank Morris, the Regional Manager of International Commercial Bank (ICB) Ashanti Region Ghana

I am a ghanaian married with two children. I have packaged a financial transaction that will benefit both of us, as the regional manager of the bank, it's my duty to send financial reports to my head office in Accra the capital city of Ghana.

On the course of 2006 end of the year's report, I discovered that my branch in which I am the manager made an excess profit of Ten Million Eight Hundred Fifty Thousand Us Dollars ($10.850.000.00) of which my head office is not aware of and they will never be aware of it.

I have since then Placed This Fund On a (SUSPENCE ACCOUNT) without a beneficiary. As officer of the bank, I cannot be directly committed to this money thus I am compelled to request for you assistance to receive this money into your bank account. I intend to part with 30% of this fund to you while 70% shall be for me.

I do need to assure you that there is practically no risk involved in this, it’s going to be bank-to-bank transfer. All I need from you is to stand as the original depositor of this fund. If you accept this offer, I will appreciate it your timely response,

Best regards,
Mr.Frank Morris.

Is there any way to change the high beam on the 2002 GL1800 without having to take off the faring?
Rich 28-Nov-2007 02:39
Fred, I just purchased your DVD's and love them. I have a black cherry '05 w/ABS. I thought I was the only one in the world that was that meticulous with the bike and did my own work, good for you. I see some wonderful questions below and would like to see your answers rather then asking the same ones over and over. Do you have a private forum or a place where you list the answers?

My most important question in the nearterm is; where can I get one of those double flexing 3/8 inch ratchet handles that you are using in the DVD? You could become a dealer and sell them.

Please advise on all!

Best regard, Rich

Fred - you do an excellent job experimenting and communicating all the many projects you work on and I really appreciate it. I especially like the step-by-step photos you post for the projects. Just looking at the photos helped me get a good handle on when I installed the Pyramid Fenda Extenda from Murph. Keep up the great work of sharing your knowledge and experience.

If you ever make a trip east to the Smokey Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway, let me know. There's tons of great roads and scenery up there. I highly encourage you to take your wife to visit the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. It's a must see, especially in the fall!

Fred - can't thank you enough. Your review of the Autocom Super-pro AVI told me how to dismantle it, something neither Autocom nor my dealer told me how to do. The dealer fitted it on my GS in a place where it gets really badly affected by water ingress, which makes it stop working completely. Thanks to your review, I've now got it apart and dried out - so I can now take steps to protect it from water (plastic bag over it!!!). Thanks again, I've book marked your site on AngelRideVideos. Fabulous!

I bought your DVD set and refer to them whenever I am planning to do any maintenance other than an oil and filter change. Your filming and picture taking techniques have really improved. You are certainly a driving factor to giving Wing riders the confidence to undertake maintenance and upgrade/improvements to their own bikes instead of religating it to a local shop. You have given us the knowledge needed to a superior job of repairs than what we could expect from some of the service shops. Thanks Fred. You 'da MAN!

Hi Fred! My name is Ed Whelan and i live on an island called Newfoundland, which is off the east coast of Canada, of which we are the tenth province to join Canada in 1949. I will be the big 60 in a couple of months. I am headed to Ameracade on June the first which means an eleven hour drive across my island to catch a Ferry boat ride of which takes around eight hours duration. I am the proud owner of an 06 wing of which makes it my sixth since 1983. I have had an 83,85,86,89,99,and now the 06. I am an electrician by trade and had to retire kind of sudden when i had to get my two knees replaced because of arthritis. There was a time when i loved to be working on my bikes but i have had to curtail that part of my life because of the arthritis. I have found over the years that Honda still does it a little on the cheap side , on the 1800, the union bolts at the front brake and clutch reservoir , no little rubber booties , and also on the rear handle grips for the passenger no plastic plugs covering the holes as on the 1500,s. Oh , and by the way congrats on your putting together the dvd,s for the guys that are still capable of doing there own work. Bye for now Fred. Ed

I am currently considering upgrading to an 1800 Wing. I sold my Connie the end of last year. What are your thoughts regarding reliability, maintenance, and the fun factor comparing the two bikes. I'm looking for a more mature ride. More touring now, than sporty. I'd appreciate your input. Thanks, Rocky

I have been riding bikes since the Norton Days and bought the first Gold Wing sold in Georgia. I bought a 2002 GoldWing in May of 2005...The bike was loaded with a Tulsa Tall windshield. The bike didn't handle for beans.Traxxion Suspension solved the suspension problem.I ordered the Windbender Hp.It came in today and we installed it..Man what a difference! It is the best of both worlds..there is no buffeting left in the bike...and the visiability is increadable...nothing like have air circulation and a windshield to go with it.Another thing is you don't get the Back wind effect as I did with the other windshield. The bike doesn't make you aware of the speed like the other windshield. Now I can ride in the heat, before 80 degrees was about it.This is a Quality windshield and worth ever cent it cost. The hardware is first class...the only thing I did was put some Silicon spray on the runners and installed the stuff. The packaging was nice and the service great. It showed up 2nd Air like it was supposed too.So My experience was super.
I know this was a little long but I hope this helps some of you guys.

Hi Fred, I have my first goldwing 2005 bought new 1/18/06. I have had all other bikes and makes from hondas to harleys, riding 36 years but my first wing. I hear the shaft or trans or the rear drive. But I here a wind, more so in 4th gear. is this normal?

Fred,

Just finished your video, I didn't realize how important it is to not wear shoes while working on the Wing.

Have you found a fix for alignment tabs wearing away? I remember seeing someone advertising a screw in deal that had a rubber bumper on it, but when I couldn't locate the ad when I needed it! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fred, I wont to say that your collection of photos is unmatched. Your time and effort to help others with your experiance is honorable and one of a kind. Your trips make me so jealous of your adventures. I recently 12/5/05 bought a 2006 with nav and have yet to make a long ride. But after looking at your photos I know a few places I have to get to.
I am from Shreveport. I think your from Texas. Where should I go first?

I noticed on your noise for cruse control fix you didn't ground the plate. Don't you think that might help?? The screw location you used isn't grounded?? I hope you get this I don't know how else to contact you.

Hi Fred, I wanted to thank you for your very explicit video's and instuctions on the installation of the Armed Guard 200 for my 1800. The only problems I'm having is adjusting the sensitivity on the perimiter radar. It is to sensitive, assuming that the minimum sensitivity is adjusted by turning counter-clockwise. At this setting the alarm is activated at approximately three feet from the bike. The perimiter alarm is mounted in the trunk on the right hand side, and I am also having trouble programming the additional remote so that both work the alarm. Is the system capable of recognizing the difference between side and centerstand depending on how it is placed when the alarm is activated?. I am planning on buying your video's in the very near future.
Best regards, Moe

Recently purchased your DVD's and thought that they are fantastic. I'm quite handy with wrenches and my 1800 facinates me in the way that it is designed, so I figured if your could take it apart using one hand and an occasional foot, I could do it with two hands and a foot. I succeeded and found a couple of problems along the way to boot. Even pulled the front fairing. The bike is back together with everything tightened and rides like new again. Did not even have any left over fasteners. Thanks for a great and very interesting tool.

I have to change the sparkplug wires on my 89 GL1500, only 58K miles. Bike is in mint condition and runs perfectly except for an idle and low end miss. Plugs changed three times no help. I suspect age cracks in wires. Do you know of a step by step procedure for doing this? The Chilton and other manuals don't address this repair. I'm good with engines, mowers, etc but do not want to attempt this without guidance. In other words I don't do anything to this jewel without study first. Being retired on a fix income and not able to find a reliable shop that I trust to work on an over 10 year old bike without going to Norfolk, VA. Here in Florida and Georgia they, Honda dealers, won't touch it if it's over 10. Something good for people to know.

Thank you in advance for your help/guidance.

I have a 1800 Goldwing thats been converted into a Hannigan Tri-Car and wonder if I am going to get by by not having frame welds cracking because of there being less stress on the frame?
Lloyd Mather 10-Aug-2005 02:06
Hi Fred;

Its been a while since we corresponded on the COG mailing list. I found your Goldwing info because my neighbour has a 2003 GL1800. He got the frame weld recall notice early last spring and hasn't taken his bike in yet. The dealer where he bought it told him they would have the bike for a few months to get the work done so he decided to wait. From the info on the wingtechtips website it appears that a sudden and catastrophic failure is unlikely so waiting until the end of the riding season here may be okay. Do you know how many failures there have been and if any were the cause of loss of control of the bike? We have also heard that the re-weld can be done in a few days, rather than several weeks or more. What has been your experience?

Thanks,
Lloyd Mather,

I just got your DVD set. I had a ball this weekend watching them. I've ridden American iron my whole life so I got the DVDs I didn't have a clue how to remove the tupperware or what to do next. I plan to fix the cruise control first. You sure know how to make things look easy and simple. Thanks for your contribution to the GL owners. I hope you make a windfall off your products. I'm looking forward to more new tips.

Dear Mr.Fred
One of our chapter U members suggested that I pull up your web site for information on the Windbender windshield and I'm truly impressed with your knowledge of the Gold Wing.
Do you have any suggestions how I can get Honda interested in my radio that appears to over modulate when selecting the A M portion, at intervals? My ride is a 2004.
Do you believe the frame cracking will lead into a law suit similar to the CB750's?

Hi Fred! Just turned 13K on my '94 Wing. Had a "hot" experience going to Destin over the 4th The eastbound I-10 bridge over Pensacola Bay was washed out by Hurricane Ivan, and there is 3500' of steel grate to cross. There is a detour for cycles. For 45 minutes I was at 5 mph of less (lots of stops). My temp indicator is usually at 1/2, but it quickly rose one whole segment, thought I was going to overheat. But it did not rise any higher. After reading all the overheating horror stories, I thought I was the next chapter, but I wasn't. Did Honda finally fix this problem? I'll be getting your DVD soon, I do it all myself, too!

Great pictures of the Pakit-Rak system installation. The ease of installation was the main factor in my decision to purchase the Pakit-Rak. The only concern I have is if the fender should be cut out a little larger than the I.D of the receiver to prevent chafing or cracking of the fender.

Hi Fred,
Nice site. I just purchased a 05 Dark Cherry Red 1800. Previous wings incl the Valkerie ( I traded in for this one ) Two 1500's.. a candy red 97 and a silver 88 then before that a 1200, 1100, 1000. The old ones I was quite adapt at technical/mechanical stuff. ( Previous Chapter Tech Advisor ) This new one however is a horse of a different color more electronic control devices such as FI. Since I have always done it myself guess I will save alot of learning curve time and get your set of DVD's. Wings still the most reliable motorcycle ever built. Thanks for all future help!

Wayne,

With regards to your right side glovebox, if it won't open with the key, you will probably have to remove the top shelter enough to lift it up so you can manually access the latch to release it. This can happen if the cable is accidently left off that goes from the key to the lid latch.

Hi Fred
Can not say enought about you picture on GL1800 repairs. The black and white pictures in the Honda manuel kind of suck but with you color pictures and written word I have completed everything job that needed to be done on the Goldwing. It is time to change the air cleaner and after looking at the pictures you posted I feel good about doing it myself. Do you plan on doing the valve adjustment that is required at 30,000 miles, are is that where you draw the line. Thanks for you hard work. Absolutely GREAT!!!!

We would like to thank you very much for the information on the Goldwing 1800 frames. We are the owners of a '03 Wing with only 4000 mi. We had an accident in the family 2 months after our purchase that has taken up a big chunk of our lifes the past year and a half . We love to ride together and were just starting to think about touring again after our kids had "left the nest". We are very disappointed in Honda's band aid approch to fixing the problem . This is a problem that should have been fixed before they came out in '01 not 4 years later..... my wife and I are not test dummies . We can't even get our local dealer to give us a good trade-in for a '05 ( we have 20 in ours and they want 10 more to trade ) . Well thanks for the good info again . Wished Honda would be as honest about their product .
Charles (Ratdog) Greene 20-Mar-2005 04:24
Fred, great information. Only one aspect of your procedures in which I must strongly disagree with... the use of Silicone Spray. In spite of the fact that it DOES make life a LOT easier than "tire soap"... I found out the hard way that it's "too good".

I had a nail in a rear tire, (no biggie) I'll just pop the tire off the rim and repair it with a plug/patch. I marked the sidewall to orient the valve stem (no "guessing" on the balance point). What I found on my next ride was... at the end of the 1,200 mile weekend... the tire had rotated on the rim approx. 90 degrees from where I'd mounted it (rear). The Valkyrie's torque overcame the bead's seal (silicone) and defeated the whole balancing exercise.

I hate tire soap when changing a tire by hand.

Valentine's day found me riding home on my first Goldwing, an '01 GL1800. The maintenance records are a little sketchy so my first actions are to change the fluids and filters. I found your website very informative.
I am very concerned about this latest frame recall, I feel Honda should do more than try and patch up our bikes.
Is there any problem you have heard about out there that some frames( in the 1st recall) have failed on either side of the repair?
Thanks again

I just want to thank you for the pix re: weld cracks. I ride an '02 1800 which I've put 40,000 miles on. I'm told by Honda that my bike is not subject to the weld craacks, but I admit I'm not very confident that they would tell me if I were. I'll be watching your site for updates. Thanks again.

Can you please let me know what you have available and also the cost.

Fred,
What experiences have you had with trailer hitches either personally or otherwise? Specifically Dauntless vs Bushtec. I've narrowed my choices down to these two. I'm curious to hear your view of the following:
1) ease of installation
2) quality of each product
3) the design of how each product is fastened to the bike
4) how each fastening point may affect the bike
5) how each fastening point affects the parts that are used for fasten

Thanks,
Newt

Fred, On your CBailey windshield, did it come with lower part blacked out or did you have to paint it with something? I have one and it just has sort of scotch like tape
across the lower bottom to protect it and is kind of unsightly when I raise the windshield. Thanks, Doug

Fred,
I ordered the DVD set on GL1800 maintenance and I was truly amazed. They are wonderful!!!!! I still don't know how you could hold the video camera with one hand and do the things you did with the other one. You did a super job and if you make any more DVD's from other areas of the GL1800 maintenance, I would sure be interested in purchasing them as well. I sure hope your wife forgave you for using her freezer when you cooled down the bearings for the steering stem.
Thanks again for your great insite,

Fred: I have lurked on the GL1800 Riders bd. for a couple of years now. I post occassionally on the GWRRA bd. I have visited your great website and printed many of your clear and well-photographed procedures to help in my 1800 maintenance. When your DVD set was announced, I didn't hesitate to order. I have NOT been disappointed! I feel I almost "know" you, and from watching you so much, when my wife comes home and hears you on the tv, she says, "How's Fred today?" and "How come he doesn't swear like you do when wrenching on the Wing?"
Seriously, I thank you for your efforts, and salute you for making a positive difference in many Winger's lives. I believe, through the power of the internet, you will soon be even more famous than you currently are.
Sincerely,

Dear RatDog,

I usually soak a rag in a bit of alcohol and run it between the tire and rim after it is mounted but before I bead it onto the rim to try to remove an residual silicone. I also let the tires sit overnight before I ride, as this allows the silicone to be absorbed into the tire.

However, I spoke with a Metzler rep and he said NOT to use silicone and only to use a sopay water solution instead. There are several stores that also sell dedicated tire lubricant that is supposed to work real well too.

Fred
Ratdog 06-Oct-2004 05:33
Mr. Harmon, I've found that I LOVE the ease with which tires go onto the rim with the Spray Silicone. However... I suggest you give this a try. Once the tire is balanced, use a grease pencil and mark the sidewall, in relation to the valve stem. Go riding and keep an eye on the sidewall mark.

I did just that (recently). Pulled my tire to patch it with a plug patch. Marked the tire before removing it and enjoyed a much simpler job of checking the balance. THEN I went on a ride. The tire slipped on the bead, to the tune of about 12 inches. I'm afraid that the Spray Silicone is just a little TOO good. BTW... I ride a Valkyrie. Roughly 100hp and ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheel. I run my rear Avon Venom R at 47 psi.

It about broke my heart to see that happen, silicone makes the work so much easier than does regular tire soap.

Fred,

Found your site while looking for other info. Am the proud owner of an '03 1800, so your work is extremely interesting and helpful. However, some of your listings seem like they should have additional text/documentation to explain what is the problem as well as what your fix is. Example: What is the Yellow Box, what does it do, where can I get it, does it apply to all users or just those in the UK, etc.?

Would also like info re: how do I get to your website to view what else goes w/your great documentation?

Thanks again.

Fred I did some of the work on two 1500 Wings I owned, and I now have an 04 1800. I have been giving a lot of thought of doing my own tire changes, and your photo gallery has helped with most of my questions. The one question I have,is there an adapter that you need for the rear wheel when you balance it,or is it just an axle? The rest of your photos and hints will help when I get ready to change fluids,as well as checking the stearing head bearings. Too bad the manuals aren't as clear as you are. Thanks for what you have done. Bob

Thanks for the many galleries of information. Used the Harbor Freight Salvage tire changer June 27th with great success. Used pieces of1-1/2 inch clear vinyl tubing split lengthwise instead of rim savers and they worked fine.

Off to see if Walmart has the Phillips H7s.

Great job in your G-Force alarm install. Better than the manufacturer by leaps and bounds. One question for you. Which direction is the diode for the truck circuit? And, the brown wire on the harness does not exist on my harness. Is there an alternate tap-in?

Fred:

Just received 2 sets of EdSets that I'm anxious to install in my HJC AC-3 helmets. You're step-by-step photos will be a great help. I noted that you attached the mic to the outside of your helmets with 3M Dual Lock fastners -- looks like the 3/4" disk/coin fastners. I have looked a number of places -- Home Depot, Sears Hardware, Ace Hardware -- for the 3M Dual Lock fastners with no luck. I can buy them on the internet in huge quantities (for huge money) from industrial suppliers, but only need a few. Do you know of any national retailers that carry the Dual Lock fastners in small (i.e., home user/consumer) quantities?

Hi Fred,
Rich G. a.k.a. Wingman1832cc here again. Great pics of the Wing on the lean. Where did yooou get those extremely amber/orange fog lamps. Currently I'm using some Pilot amber driving lamps and fogs in addition to the factory option lamps. I have a good choice of lighting patterns (4 at a time maximally) but if I can get orange ones that you have in the pics I'll get rid of one pair of the Pilot's. Thanks for any information in advance.

fred harmon23-Feb-2004 13:47
The Concours is a great bike. It will keep up with a Wing any day. It has better cornering clearance and overall handling. The brakes aren't as good as the Wings, but they suffice. Down side is that the engine can be a bit buzzy at certain speeds. A good carb synch and foam grips helps resolve this issue. Acceleation is about the same, though the Connie doesn't have as much torque.
Jerry A. 17-Feb-2004 08:09
Fred,
First,I want to add my thanks to the rest for your sharing of this wealth of information. Secondly, I was wondering if you could tell me something about the Kawasaki Concours. I thought I saw somewhere that you had quite a bit of experience on them before you started working with the GL1800's. What I'm looking to do is sell my '02 Wing and get a one or two year old Connie. I need to come up with some cash to do some home remodeling, but, don't want to "sign on the line" to get it. I figured I could sell the Wing and buy a Concours and do what I need to do to the house with the difference. If, however, the Concours won't have somewhere near the same acceleration, top speed and cornering ability of the 1800 I don't think I'd be satisfied riding one till I could get back into a Wing. I don't have much use for the radio and all the electronic bells and whistles on the Wing, so it won't mean much to lose that stuff. I ride solo 99.9% of the time, so the loss of the comfy second seat won't be an issue either. I just don't want to be left behind by the more aggressive wing riders I hang out with. Also, is the Concours a reliable bike and does it require a lot of maintenance? What kind of quirks does it have? (ie. tire cupping, overheating, head shake, etc.)
Larry Stone 15-Feb-2004 16:42
Hi Fred,
I reinstalled my top shelter for the first time yesterday after replacing the air filter. Just wanted to double check you site to see what if anything I didn't consider. I think I'm ok. It went back together easier than I was expecting. I had previoulsy plugged all the electric cables back in so that I could start 'er up before putting top shelter back on. Let it run for about 20 minutes without touching throttle so ECM could acclimate. Everything seems fine. Screened the air ducts with 1/4 inch hardware cloth to keep mice out this time. Now have lots of traps, poison and moth balls around bike. Hope it works.

The one thing that worried me a little about putting in new air filter was whether the gasket was staying in place, especially at the front. After initial instalation of the new filter, I took top off air box again, removed and reinstalled filter. Seemed to be ok the first time but since the installation process of the filter tends to bump the box at the front and I couldn't see after if gasket is ok, I'm left wondering....

With your site's help, I also did brake and clutch fluid change, anti-freeze change and will next be checking lower steering head bearings for grease. Fork oil change will wait until next winter I think, but it's next.

Thanks for all you have done to help us get the job done. I just don't have any confidence in the "mechanics" around here. Too many horror stories.

A buddy and I have found your website exceedingly helpful as we both bought 1800's this past spring. We have discovered our speedometers are registering "fast" and I would like some info on the "yellow box" if you get a chance. Please note we are from Canada and of course or speedos read in kilometers/hour.

Fred, Thanks a lot for the info you so expertly provide. I am doing the brake fluid change and although the manual tells you how you take it several steps further and explain pulling the old fluid from the master cylinder and also the prep/covering the bike so no chances are taken if a spill should occur. Outstanding site. Makes me wonder how often I'll/dealer will need to work on my Wing. I'm coming from the BMW side of the bike world so I have a appreciation for tools and for the detail and quality of your site. At rallys the Wing riders, when asked for what they carry while on the road, would comment, a spare head light bulb and some would mention a tire plugging device, your site conjures visions of more time in the "tool" mode than in "ride" mode, hope I'm just miss reading the site. With 1 week and 700 miles on my black beauty I'm hooked, so if "tool" mode is the norm, I'm really appreciative of your site and will visit it often. Thanks Boz

Hello Fred,

I tried to find your e-mail but it was gone from the 1800 site, I just wanted to forward that last year I reported 8 broken frames to the WOTI site and got my head taken off. One was the Florida bike, there were 2 in GA at the same dealer at the same time, 1 in Ohio, 1 in Alaska and 2 in Montana. These locations are close but you can check my post last year in the WOTI.org archives. I ride a 98 1500, when Honda came out with the 1800 it just turned me off, we got a 01 Nomad but did not like it and this year got a 03 Ultra and love it. Sorry to hear of the greif you recieved. Take care, just wanted you to know, by the way Honda hushed up all of the above mentioned bikes.

Fred;
I just purchased a new GL1800 and was exposed to the 1800riders board and I was amazed at all the information you have gathered (not to mention the photo experience you have gathered). You must have a crew of photographers and publisists. I was asonished at the number of situations you have dealt with on your 1800 and recorded all the fixes for everyone to benefit from. The folks that flamed you on the other board really don't know what they were doing by shooting themselves in the foot (another reason a phone call is so much better than an e-mail - you never know the tone in which something is spoken). For them to willingly throw away such a repository of knowledge and disregard your efforts is foolish.

I'm writing to say thank you for all your efforts and thank you for the quality of explanation and detail documenting your efforts and benefitting people such as myself. I will be doing almost everyone of the neet little fixes and insightful detailed items you show on your great website.

As a friend once said to me; "May the wind always be at your back, may the sun shine down on you and may the smiles of God be upon you and yours.

Good luck and Thanks

Great site and lots of good info.

I learn from the experiences of others and it appears that you have a lot of experience.

I bought my '03 Wing in July (Illusion Blue) the next thing I bought were the service manuals. Now I am building a collection of metric tools.

I have already started adding "parts" and I wish that I knew about this site before I started "working" on my bike.

Just wanted to say thanks for your efforts over on the 'other' board. Your postings helped me to decide whether to keep my Valkyrie or buy a new '03 Wing. I did buy the '03 last weekend! I will visit your site often to learn more about my new ride. PLEASE keep up your great work. There are more of us that appriciate what you do than those that don't. Unfortunately we hear more from the 1% complainers than we do from the other 99%.

Fred, just a short note to say I'm very sorry you left the 1800 board - but I understand when folks are so narrowminded and bash you. Your efforts to post info has been great.. AND when I first found your site I downloaded all your articles to my computer so I would have them for reference without going online.....

Thanks for all the great work.

Fred, I glad to see that your gallery in back. I'm sorry you left the gl1800 riders board. I was floored by some of the flames that were sent over the broken frame issue. However, I want you to know how valuable your web site has been to me. I use it all the time. You can rest with a quiet resolve and satisfaction that you have helped so many including me with your seat of the pants technical knowledge. Thanks, Seattle Slim aka Gil Bruno

Sorry to see you leave, Fred - and hope you might return

contributions to the GL1800 community, I believe your
unselfish effort on the frame issue has probably saved
the lives of some riders out there who have never even
heard of an aluminum weld - and likely never will.

That is truly something to be proud of.

Hello Fred

Your pictures are very great.
I drive also a GL1800 and here in Germany we have many problems with the overheating.
I habe very interesting pictures and I will send them to you.
There are so many problems with the GL1800 and the reaction from honda in Germany is nothing.
So we make in Germany on September, 15 a demonstration at 10:00 am, in front of their house in Offenbach.
It is the first time in the history that such thing is going.
Also you should do it, because I see that you in the USA have so many problems with the GL1800.

I'm sorry that I didn't find your web page along time ago. I'm adding it to my favourites. It would be great if Honda would emulate your approach with pictues and explainations. Like your choise of colour, have an orange 03, not sure what the colour is called. Some people tell me it's pearl orange.

Some people are gifted in mysterous ways, and it is difficult to determine the gift and the substance. With you, Fred, your gift is obvious to everyone touched by your skills with a computer, camera, and sets of tools, knowledge, and most likely other areas held more private. You make it seem so easy, and in the process help people see the light. Yes, your gift is special, and your capacity to share it is an asset to all of us who have this opportunity to wintess how one person can make a difference and set an example. WOW just viewed your Western Tour photos, found the link on the GL1800 riders site, even though I don't own a Wing, I enjoy their sites. Someday I see a Wing in my future though when I tire of my Harley.

Your photos are absolutely breath-taking. I'm sure the journey was much more enjoyable on a bike than on 4 wheels.

Fred:
I have just finished browsing your pages and am very impressed with the quality and thoroughness of your work. I will be picking up my new Wing in July, and since I have a spinal cord injury I have been considering adding a product called Landing Gear. Would you have any knowledge of this product and what it would take to install it? I am sure that your pages will be very useful after I get the Wing, and I will be trying to do all the work myself that I can. Thank you for all your efforts and keep up the good work.
Milt Contella 25-May-2003 02:04
Glad to see you've picked up where you left off with the Concours tech work, Fred. Your Concours advice was always higly valued. Your Wing site is impressive. It will come in handy for me on down the road.

I've only had my Wing about a month and the dealer had to pull the rear end out
to replace a driveshaft boot that wasn't properly fitted at the factory. Not a
great start with the bike, but after a 100 mile ride when the work was done, I could'nt
perceive any difference.....

Greetings from Stephen. I just bought an '02 Wing Dec 9,'03. I really love your website, and the GL1800 riders site. Your pictorials and info are great. So far the only problems I've had with the wing is the trunk lid rubbing,(only have 950 miles on it). Think I'm going to get the harbor frt. tire changer in a week or so. I wonder if you have to take 1 or both of the front brake disc off the wheel when changing the tire? Boy I thought changing the air filter on my Valkyrie was kind of a pain! Keep up the great work. Stephen

Your page is amazing. Just the thing that I was looking for. Now I know that I don't want to tackle replacing the air cleaner. It looks like about twice the work as it was on the 1500's. LOL. All kidding aside, you have a wonderful site here and I learned a lot looking it over. I am just about ready to tackle the clutch and brake fluid replacement and as long as I have it all apart I might as well do some other things at the same time. Your photo's and comments will help a lot. Anyway, keep up the good work. Lennnie in Michigan
Phil Tarman 31-Dec-2002 06:27
Fred, Looking at your pictures of the fork work on the GL1800 I noticed the thumbnail asking if I/we saw anything unusual about the picture of the F-16. I would normally think that it was the kitchen sink, but everyone knows that the F-16 can carry anything and still carry a kitchen sink.

When I was pastor of Community United Methodist Church in Ogden, UT, I had several F-16 drivers who were members of my church. But it didn't do me any good -- I never got a ride, not even in a simulator. I did get called twice to come fly the simulator at 0230, but both times I was out of town. Oh, well....

See ya!

Hi,Fred!

Just joined the GL1800 today, 12/27/02, and was looking at your pics of antifreeze change.

I was interesting in knowing what your old antifreeze looked like and smelled like - I changed mine and it smelled very old (have a black ABS 2002 model 1800)and I have only had the bike a year this past March,2002.

I saved it and showed my wife and it looked like to us there was some sort of "crude" in the old antifreeze. The smell is bad from that old antifreeze!

But, I used the orange for replacement and hopefull this summer I won't have the overheating problem I have experienced this past summer (02!

Hope you had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours!

Hi Fred,

Enjoy your posts on the bulletin boards. Thanks for the information on the headlight armor. Just curious why Tulsa had it for the 1500, but said they were having trouble getting it to work on the 1800. Sounds like it must be about the same thing Tulsa had. Fred,
Thanks so much for posting the pictures. I think I now can adjust my cruise control properly. Too much lag for me the way it came from the shop. Also looks like the air filter is more than a simple drop in like my old 86 1200 was. I'll have fun with that next year on my new metallic silver 02 wing, not many miles on it now as I just picked it up a couple of months ago. I'll remedy that this weekend when I ride from Wisconsin over to Michigan.
Also loved the Yellowstone pics. Took that trip last year on the old 86, had a great time and great scenery around every turn.
