The city of Varazdin is known mainly for its castle and baroque buildings. When Croatia was under siege by the Turks in the 16th century, Varazdin was the most powerful stronghold on the frontier. For a while after that it served as the capital of Croatia.
The Varazdin Castle (complete with moat) dates back to the 15th century.
