The Roaring Twenties

International Tennis Hall of Fame - Newport, Rhode Island USA

Tennis exploded during The Twenties. Radio brought news of tennis matches into homes. A newer, larger stadium at Forest Hills was built, and Wimbledon was relocated …to accommodate ever-growing crowds. Players took on celebratory status …appreciated as much for style and charisma as athleticism.

The free style of the 1920’s was also reflected on the courts. Following initial raised eyebrows over public immodesty, tennis dress -especially for women-became more comfortable for play. Source: Paraphrase of a museum sign.
