Will I Get More Treats This Year?
Our Pekinese/Chihuahua pal, Miko, is licking his chops about his prospects for 2015. He is always begging for more treats. Don't feel sorry for him, he gets plenty!

Daybreak, a Time to Break Into Song
I very much enjoyed the sunrise this morning! The color reflecting on some water just made it that much more appealing. It was worth going out on a cold morning to get the picture.
I recalled this song from the past, sung by the golden voiced Frank Sinatra. Listen to it here:

Asphalt Jumble
Fresh black asphalt makes a wonderful background for colors, as with these leaves. The scene is totally unrehearsed. :) I found the result pleasing.

Walking On Water
This American Coot sure looks like it is walking, or running, on water as it begins its take off. The scene is in Delta Ponds. There are lots of them there now. I got a good shot of their strange feet, which I hope to post later.
My thoughts today were of my father who was born on this day, 103 years ago. He died in 2000.I still miss my parents very much.

Sunrise At Clearwater Park
We have quite a bit of fog this time of year and this morning looked promising for photo opportunities. So I headed to Clearwater Park to get some shots of the fog along the Willamette River. I liked this scene.

The Herons Are Beginning to Nest!
Even though the trees are bare, with no leaves to hide the nests, the herons are already beginning to nest. I saw this pair in the nesting tree in Alton Baker Park. Sure is foggy out there!
Red-Breasted Sapsucker?
I took a walk on this foggy morning and about a mile away from home I saw some color on a tree in a drainage ditch by the road. I stopped dead in my tracks and looked closely. I saw this beautiful little bird. In my "Birds of Oregon" book, the Red-Breasted Sapsucker is the only species that matches the bird I saw. I was thrilled, as they are not a common sight, according to the book.
Interestingly, it was so occupied pecking at the tree that it ignored me. It looked right at me a few times but went right back to work. I got pretty close, about six feet away from it, got my shots and left so as not to disturb it. I was thankful that it posed for me as long as it did. I had my little V1 and a 10-100mm lens, which I use for general shooting, but wished I had the V2 and its 70-300 VR, which gives me 810mm EQV FL. Oh well, I was able to maneuver pretty close.

Middle Fork Path
I had an opportunity this afternoon to take a short walk on the Middle Fork Path. The path is 4-miles-long and runs from Clearwater Park all the way to Dorris Ranch, alongside a stretch of the Middle Fork Willamette River. Some of the path at the Dorris Ranch end goes through forest, as this scene shows.

Striking a Pose
Out in Delta Ponds I met my friend, the Great Blue Heron, after he landed on an old snag. I wanted him to pose for me, so he graciously struck a pose, balanced on one leg. I was so grateful that I got my shots, thanked him and graciously walked away so as not to disturb him. I really like his portrait. :)

Clearwater Park Scene
I loved how the golden morning light reflected on the water in this scene from Clearwater park in Springfield. The result looks a bit like an HDR image, but was just processed using my usual quick and easy method. I found it to be a very restful scene.

Bewick's Wren
I can't find exactly the same coloring in my Birds of Oregon book. The closest thing I can find is a variety of wren. The beak and white stripe above the eye looks like that of some wrens. What is it? I would like help with the ID. NOTE: From all the feedback I learned it is a Bewick's Wren. Thanks to all those who responded!

De Fence
I just couldn't resist! :) This fence caught my eye while on a neighborhood walk, I thought the lighting made the fence jump out from the background. It's good to always look for interesting light.
14-JAN-2015
Willamette River at Clearwater Park
Took another walk in Clearwater park. I like the variety of things I see there and the park is not far away, one of those closest to me. This is one of the scenes that appealed to me.

One Young Eagle Sitting in a Tree, I hope it was sitting there posing for me!
While walking in Delta Ponds, a gentleman who walked by called my attention to an eagle high in a far off tree. It's a young one that hasn't had its head changed to white as yet. I tried to get as close as I could, but even below the tree it was a long way up there. I liked this pose and the angle of its head.
Lighting conditions were the kind that give me the most trouble, a dark cloudy day with a dark bird against the sky. I did the best I knew how with the exposure and shot some pictures. I had to crop the result considerably. The high resolution of the D800 is proving its value in situations like this because one can crop the file a great deal and still have enough resolution and sharpness for a decent picture.

New Apartments on Goodpasture Road
These new apartments sit across the road from part of Delta Ponds. I imagine that they get a great view of the ponds, especially from the second floor apartments. If I lived there I would have a tripod set up by the window with a long lens on it. The tall pole on the left was placed there for the osprey to use for nesting. They had a nest there last year.
Delta Ponds lies by the Willamette River, and is adjacent to roads, highways, apartments or office buildings. It started out as some gravel pits that were used for the building of the I-5 freeway a few miles to the east. Eugene Parks won an award from the State of Oregon for developing the ponds, and deservedly so. They have done a great job. I remember when all of this land was agricultural. Now that is going back a ways! :)

Willamette River and Canal at Clearwater Park
Early morning at Clearwater Park is an enjoyable experience, especially when there is fog. We have that often at this time of year. Fortunately, the park is not far away so I can head there if the sky looks promising. Then it's a matter of waiting for when the moment is right. I enjoyed this scene!

Varied Thrush Sharing the Sidewalk
Took a walk this afternoon in between showers and came across this bird, which I believe is a Varied Thrush. I was able to take several pictures of the bird and it just stood there. It sure was a beautiful bird!
After walking away, I began to think that maybe there is something wrong with the bird. From one angle it looked like a wing was hanging down somewhat. When I got home I made a few calls to see if I could find someone who knew birds and if help was possible. I got nowhere. I felt guilty about taking pictures but not finding help. But in the end I didn't know of anything that could be done. Hopefully, it just looked like the bird was in trouble.

Running on the Edge
The Pre Trail passes along two sides of this pond in Alton Baker Park. It is quite popular and is used daily by UO runners, as well as many others. It is a pretty pond and popular with fishermen. Sometimes various birds are found on or near the pond. Here, we see a runner on the trail as it courses along the edge of the pond.
I always enjoy6 my walks here.

Really Making Tracks
I am pretty sure this is a Bufflehead. I got a good look at it before it took off. When it saw me coming down the trail by the water at Delta Ponds it made tracks out of there, like a rock skipping across the water! I was fortunate to capture its tracks. :) Now that was fun!
Note for the curious: The image is as shot, with only contrast, color, sharpness, and crop adjustments.

On Golden Pond
I just loved the color tones I found at this pond in Alton Baker Park. The pond has provided me hours of enjoyment and a variety of photo opportunities. It is the destination of many of my walks.
22-JAN-2015
Turtle at Delta Ponds
I didn't expect to see any turtles today. They seem to enjoy a sunny day for being out of water, sitting on a log. We did get a bit of sunshine, enough to bring them out I guess. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing this one and the opportunity to photograph it. Handsome fellow, I think!
Cool Morning Sky
The morning sky over Springfield was full of pretty colors and interesting forms. I found it unusual and eye catching. I hope that you do too!
24-JAN-2015
Windblown
I thought this Great Blue Heron at Delta Ponds looked a bit windblown. Looks good to me! :)

Middle Fork Path at Dorris Ranch
The Middle Fork Trail is four miles long, with one end at Clearwater Park and the other end at Dorris Ranch. The trail is managed by the Willamalane Park District. This scene is at the Dorris Ranch end of the trail.

Canal at Clearwater Park
This is a scene along the canal that runs through Clearwater Park. To get to this spot one has to follow a primitive unofficial trail along the opposite side of the canal from the official paved path. Since the park on this side of the canal is undeveloped, it is a pretty place to walk. The spot where I shot this photo is as far as one can go. It was worth the effort.

Hungry for Hydrangea
I found I still had this shot in my camera. It was shot last June! There were some other flower images on the card too. Can't believe I hadn't downloaded them! They were on there with some more recent images and I used the card yesterday in my D300. I liked the leaves on the left. They remind me of a mouth about to take a bite out of the Hydrangea, Yes, I know! I have a good imagination. :)

Poetry in Motion
This Great Egret just took off from that old snag and looked so pretty with its wings folded that I couldn't resist this picture. It was true poetry in motion.

Fully Equipped for Bird photography
This is Rick O'Shea, well equipped for photographing birds at Delta Ponds.
That is a Nikkor 600mm f/4 telephoto lens on that tripod, a beautiful pro lens.
He has an excellent collection of wildlife photographs from around Oregon. I sure enjoyed visiting with him.

Sometimes it is well worth being up early to catch the sunrise.
The lights and smoke stacks blend well with the colors of this gorgeous sunrise.
I was thankful I got to see it.

Through The Screen Door
I was shooting some pictures of the rhododendron that is blooming (already!) in our front yard when Carol opened the front door to see what I was doing. I turned the camera on her and got this shot of her and Miko through the screen door.

Winchester Bridge
I thought this bridge over the South Umpqua River at Winchester, Oregon was nice looking. The photo was shot from the fish ladder at the dam below. The bridge carries Highway 99 over the river. Beside it sits the Interstate 5 freeway bridge.
"Design - The Winchester Bridge is the longest bridge designed by Conde B. McCullough during the 1920's. The bridge has a unique Tudor Gothic architectural style incorporated into the curtain walls and railing."

Sing A Song
When I got to Alton Baker Park this morning I heard a bird singing. I stood still and looked around to see where it was. My eyes being what they are, I have a real problem seeing small birds. But there it was, right before me on top of a bush, singing its heart out! It made me feel good, like the song, "Sing a Song', by the Carpenters does.

Harbinger of Spring
My goodness, flowers are blooming here! Of course, we have had such a warm winter with temperatures in the 50's many days. I think the plants think it's spring. We have a rhododendron in the front yard in bloom, but then that particular bush blooms every year in February. Anyway, this was the first crocus I have seen, and it was blooming at Alton Baker Park. I think it is a harbinger of spring.

Alton Baker Park Lifeguard
It seems that this Great Blue Heron finds the no swimming sign a favorite place to hang out. I have seen it there on each of my last three visits to the park. I think it means the heron is Alton Baker Park's lifeguard and takes the job seriously.

Spots Before My Eyes!
I think the Spotted Towhee is such an attractive bird! I didn't realize it prefers "dry thickets, brushy tangles, forest edges, old fields, shrubby backyards, chaparral, coulees, and canyon bottoms, places with dense shrub cover and plenty of leaf litter for the towhees to scratch around in." (From allaboutbirds.org) It is a bird that can be attracted to your back yard if you have scrubs and leaf litter. This one was seen at Alton Baker Park.
"Backyard Tips:
Spotted Towhees are likely to visit – or perhaps live in – your yard if you’ve got brushy, shrubby, or overgrown borders. If your feeders are near a vegetated edge, towhees may venture out to eat fallen seed. If you want to attract towhees to your feeders, consider sprinkling some seed on the ground, as this is where towhees prefer to feed." -

Mischievous Thief
Some don't care for the Western Scrub Jay. I find them entertaining and fun to watch because they’re so animated. Besides, I think they are beautiful, with their deep azure blue with dusty gray-brown and white colors. I think they make pretty subjects.
COOL FACTS FROM "ALL ABOUT BIRDS"
Western Scrub-Jays have a mischievous streak, and they’re not above outright theft. They’ve been caught stealing acorns from Acorn Woodpecker caches and robbing seeds and pine cones from Clark’s Nutcrackers. They even seem aware of their guilt: some scrub-jays steal acorns they’ve watched other jays hide. When these birds go to hide their own acorns, they check first that no other jays are watching.

They Are Here in Large Numbers!
I visited Delta Ponds this afternoon and got soaked. It didn't bother the birds. And the cormorants are here in large numbers. They visit every year about this time. This Double Crested Cormorant was high in a tree that was full of them.
I didn't think it looked like a Double Crested, but checked the Audubon website and it confirmed that it was, saying - "The Double-crested (which rarely looks noticeably crested in the field) is the most generally distributed cormorant in North America, and the only one likely to be seen inland in most areas" There is a lot of good information here -

Biking in Alton Baker Park
This type of bike is seen occasionally around Eugene. Looks comfortable but I don't know that I could keep one upright. Bike riders use the paths through Alton Baker Park a lot, rain or shine, as you see here. I learned this type of bike is a 'Recumbent'.
Recumbent Bikes
"Born out of the marriage between a bicycle & a deckchair, recumbent bikes offer a laid back reclined riding position which are chosen for, mainly, ergonomic reasons. The rider’s back & buttocks are well supported giving rise to a very comfortable riding position. With a smaller frontal profile &, hence, lower wind resistance, most recumbent bikes offer an aerodynamic advantage over conventional bike types. Available in a wide range of configurations, recumbent bikes can be long to short wheelbase, with mixed sized wheels, rear wheel or front wheels drive & offer different steering methods too – overseat, underseat or no-hands. I think that it is fair to say that recumbent bikes have a very loyal & bordering on cult following." -

Rhodies in the Rain
It's been raining all day. So no walk for me today. I will make use of the treadmill instead, but it's sure not as fun! My photo for today is a shot of the rhododendron in bloom in our front yard. I shot the picture from the porch. :) Lots of blossoms like this on the bush!

Splish, Splash, I Was Taking A Bath!
Have you ever seen a Great Blue Heron take a bath? I got to see one today, and got several really nice shots, after spending time just waiting for some action.
This one shows the heron really immersed in it all! Great fun!

Regal Bald Eagle
I took a walk at Delta Ponds and saw a few of the regular birds plus a couple pairs of Greater Scaups. But I was disappointed that I had nothing special to take home with me. As I walked the path heading for my car, a young man came running after me and asked if I saw the bald eagle a ways back. Since it was on another part of the path from where I walked I hadn't seen it. I went back because I always get excited to see another eagle. Sure enough it was high in a tree right above the path. I was so pleased that I got photos of it before going home that it is my choice for photo of the day. It is good to see that the bald eagles have returned to our area and are nesting here.
"The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. These regal birds aren’t really bald, but their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolate-brown body and wings. Look for them soaring in solitude, chasing other birds for their food, or gathering by the hundreds in winter. Once endangered by hunting and pesticides, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection."

Light in the Night`
Well, it is actually a yard light in early morning, but that doesn't rhyme. LOL I saw this light on an early morning walk and was attracted to it. Attraction leads to composing a photo, and so you have it, for better or for worse. Me? I like it a lot. :)

Spring is Coming to Skinner Butte
I climbed Skinner Butte today. It's not very high but it's not far from Alton Baker Park and I decided to walk over to Skinner Butte Park and go up to the top of the butte. I saw a lot of early growth on the trail to the top. It is sure beginning to look like spring. These buds and blossoms are evidence of that.

Willamette River - Thread in the Tapestry of the Willamette Valley
It is always wonderful to get a sunny day in Western Oregon in the wintertime. Especially is this true along the Beautiful Willamette River, described by one of our Governors as "the thread in the tapestry of the Willamette Valley." This is a view of the Willamette River from Clearwater Park in Springfield.

The King on His Throne
I am sorry, but I just had to post another image of a Bald Eagle. I just love its elegant pose. I saw the eagle land in a tree in Delta Ponds and got to a spot for this shot. I used my little Nikon 1 V2 with the matching Nikon 1 70-300mm VR, a tiny but ultra sharp lens. On the little V2 with its 2.7x crop factor, I get an equivalent 810mm image at the long end of the zoom. Even at that I still had to crop the image by half, so the result is amazingly good to me.

I saw these boots and skirt in a store window and imagined a beautiful western cowgirl getting ready for the square dance.
If you look long enough perhaps you will see her too!

My Walk Along The River
I enjoyed my walk along the McKenzie River on the trail that borders Armitage Park. The grass and the moss covered rocks along the trail were vivid green and stood out against the browns and reds of the vegetation and fallen leaves. The day was a bit gloomy but the landscape added most welcome color. It was a good walk.

I Heard a Bird Singing!
I heard a bird singing and wondered what it had to say.
That little bird was wishing me a nice sunny day.
I thanked it for its song and went upon my way,
knowing the little bird would keep singing come what may!
Now I hope that you hear the bird sing without any pay.
He has a song in his heart, he's just made that way.
(Poem by Vern Rogers)
"Spotted Towhees have a fairly simple song,,,,,,It lasts about 1.5 seconds. The song starts with one or two (up to eight) short introductory notes and then a fast trill that can sound like a taut rubber band being plucked, or a piece of paper stuck into a fan. Some Spotted Towhee songs have just the trill phrase only." (The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, All About Birds) To hear their song -

A Peach of a Pair!
Bald Eagle pair at Delta Ponds. This is likely the pair that nests on Skinner Butte. The nest, on top of a tree, is huge! Here is a video about the nest there -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nq061p10rU Check it out, worth watching!
Below is some information about eagle life history and reproduction:
"Bald eagles are solitary, but monogamous animals. Although they spend winters and migrations alone, bald eagles maintain the same breeding pair year after year. A mated eagle pair finds a nesting site and produces offspring each year. If one of the pair dies, the surviving bald eagle will look for a new mate in the next breeding season. The nests are built on the tops of trees. The pair uses sticks and twigs to construct a platform nest. Some pairs return to the same nest the following year. Bald eagles normally lay two or three eggs. The eggs are incubated for about 35 days. Depending on the location, the eggs are laid in the winter or spring." - (Quoted from National Wildlife Federation website -

Moon Slice +
A couple nights ago, on the 20th, I saw a slice of the moon showing in the evening sky. It was beautiful, but what also caught my attention were the two other objects to the left of the moon. I believe on is a planet, not sure just what the other is. The newspaper the next day had a shot of the same scene. and told what the two other objects were. I noted it and then forgot about it. Now I can't find it, and I am upset with myself. Does anyone know the identities of the other two objects? Note: I learned the lower larger body is Venus and the small upper one is Mars! Thanks to Andy, Steve and Ken!
The photograph was made handheld with my Nikon 1 V2 and Nikon 1 70-300mm VR lens. The small sensor did a good job, but one of my larger cameras with long lens on a tripod would likely have done better with more detail. But still, the scene is just what I saw.

Professional Hunter
Today's photo is an image of the master hunter, the Great Blue Heron, with its prey, a bullfrog, at Delta Ponds. I could see that the heron was quite involved with its task along the edge if a pond. Patience has its rewards. I had to wait on the ready for a while before anything happened. But then so did the heron!

Ferns in the Forest
The forest at Dorris Ranch is a beautiful place to walk. It lies between the filbert (hazelnut) orchards and the Willamette River! It is so quiet (one sees few other hikers), a place where a person can get lost in their thoughts, an opportunity to reflect on the wonders of nature. I find the remarkable balance and design in nature very humbling to contemplate.I very much enjoyed this scene.

Morning Along the Willamette River
Clearwater Park is a good place for morning views of the Willamette River, especially when there is some fog. I thought the colors in this scene were quite pleasing.

Eagle Eye
I've seen eagles at Delta Ponds more this year, which is great! This one appears to be intently watching something below. It is a real compliment to say someone is as sharp-eyed as an eagle. Their eyesight is amazing. They can spot prey from high in the air and at a good distance. There is an eagle's nest on Skinner Butte and I imagine they will soon be nesting in it.

Ah, THANKS so much to those who identified the plant as a wild flowering Currant!

Water Trough
When American Coots take off they may appear to be running on water. At other times these fast birds move so quickly that they leave a trough of water behind. I was able to capture this interesting occurrence at Delta Ponds.

Happy Landing!
This Great Blue Heron landed in the nesting tree at Alton Baker Park. I was ready to capture it as it did! I will be watching them and the nesting tree whenever I can. Guess everybody knows I love herons! :)

The Shadow Knows!
This is a selfie of sorts. I noticed my shadow on a fence as I walked by and thought, 'maybe there is a photograph here.' Anyway, this is what you get for today. :)
Perhaps I am dating myself with the title, and not too many remember a radio program called "The Shadow"! More recently a movie was made based on the character. I can remember as a young kid hearing the program, a detective story, on the radio and being somewhat scared by the story and sound effects. Sometimes a person's imagination is more vivid than a scene on TV or in the movies.

Hooded Merganser
I saw this Merganser along one of one of the Delta Ponds. It was obscured by brush and was tough to get a shot as it stayed behind the brush. I got this shot through an opening in the brush. It took enough work to get the shot that I decided to make it photo of the day. :)

Hello Deer!
I was walking along a narrow trail through the forest at Clearwater Park when I came to a spot where a deer trail crossed it. As I looked down the trail, sure enough there were three or four deer coming toward me. The doe in the lead stopped and looked directly at me, just long enough for me to get a couple shots of it. They then turned and off they went. It was a great moment!

Just Dropped in to Sit a Spell
I didn't go on a photo walk this morning, had too much to do. As I was eating breakfast, I heard a loud noise, like someone threw something against a wall. I looked out the sliding glass doors in our little sun-room and saw a bird sitting on our patio. I realized the poor thing had hit the house, whether the glass doors or something else. It just sat there. I thought it best to leave it alone for a while to see if it came out of it. When Carol got up she let the dogs out and they immediately began barking at something on the fence. It was my bird! Thank heavens it could fly. But it seemed to still be a bit dazed and just sat there. Carol called to me to come out and take some pictures of it. I got some nice shots, one of which is this one. The bird is a Varied Thrush. After sitting there a while, it finally flew away. Happy ending! :) And my photo for today came to me! I didn't need to go anywhere!
It does seems strange to me that on January 18th I posted my first photo of a Varied Thrush that was standing on the sidewalk, also appearing dazed. I was able to get quite close to photograph it, hoping it too was only stunned and would fly away. Makes me wonder if Varied Thrushes are actually good fliers! :) I can't imagine that to be true. Perhaps this was just coincidental. I am sure they all have their flying licenses!

This is another scene from Clearwater Park. I really like going there on a foggy morning to catch the sun shining through the fog and reflecting on the water, as in this view of the Willamette River.

Our First Rhody to Bloom!
This rhododendron blooms early each February. Since it has been so warm here this winter, the rhody began having buds in January, and was filled with blossoms in February. But then we had a couple frosty mornings and it ruined all of the blossoms. Much to my surprise, the rhody now has new blossoms coming out! They sure stand out from the wilted discolored old ones. This is one of the new blossoms.
(I should have used a bit smaller aperture. :)

Half Inch Long Ivy Geranium Bud
I used a new extension tube with my V2 today to get a very close up shot of this 1/2 inch long Ivy Geranium bud (I measured it). Carol had just planted them in a front window planter and I thought it would be good for a first try with the extension tube. I got two tubes in a set, and they work with full metering and autofocus on the V2. Quite nifty!

When a Tree Falls in the Forest
When I saw this log, I saw not just an old dead tree but the cycles of nature at work. The elements making up this tree do not go out of existence, they merely change. As we can see, the elements making up the dead tree become nourishment for the moss and ferns now growing from it. Another of the miracles of nature that can only be explained by recognizing the wisdom at work that is beyond the capabilities and wisdom of mere man. Don't know about you, but it humbles me!

Dendrochronology or tree-ring dating, is the scientific method of dating based on the analysis of patterns of tree rings, also known as growth rings. I will depend on you to determine the age of this tree. :)

Granddaughter Breanne with Our First Great-grandchild, Landon.
Our granddaughter and her family paid us a visit on Thursday. They will be moving to Montana tomorrow. Anyway, here she is with our first great-grandchild, Landon. We can always hope they move back sometime.

A Walk in The Woods
I took a walk in the woods at Clearwater Park. It is such a pretty place!

Frosty Rails
On a chilly morning these rails took on a more attractive look, to me anyway. It seems that so many things can be made prettier by means of the right presentation. :)
Made my semi-annual trip ot Portland today, to have my eye checked at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU), and things look good. I got the go ahead to have cataract and cornea surgery. So, hopefully, I will be able to see better soon.

When Shadows Fall!
Whenever we go to Portland for my eye appointment at Casey Eye Institute, my daughter is our designated driver for the return trip. I sit in the back seat bored, with dilated eyes. Sometimes I nap and other times I have my camera out watching for a likely photo op. Wearing dark glasses doesn't help any, and neither does the fact that we are traveling at 70 MPH. But I keep trying. I was pleased with this image, shot as the sun was having its last hurrah of the day. It's the time of day when shadows fall.
(I maanged to frame the shot for a nice composition. No cropping done.)

Dark Eyes
I believe this is a Dark-Eyed Junco, anyway the features and coloration are just like the one in my "Birds of Oregon" book. :) I feel fortunate to even see the small birds right now, let along get a good shot of one. I was pleased to see this pretty little thing!
19-MAR-2015
Red-tailed Hawk
The hawk, in Delta Ponds, was high in a tree quite far from where I stood. The image was cropped to make it appear larger in the picture frame. I thought the image turned out well, especially considering the smaller sensor of the V2, a little camera I love! I have a hard time finding hawks to photograph. So I was happy to see this one. The morning light gives it a nice warm tone.

Stay At Home Mom
I had to run to the Post Office late yesterday to get my tax return in the mail. I thought I would take a detour (a bit out of the way, LOL) to check on the bald eagle's nest on Skinner Butte. Sure enough Momma was in the nest. I assume it was Momma, since I think they take turns on the nest. I had to wait a while till she turned her head since she was facing the wrong way (for me, anyway). The directional light of evening bathed the nest and eagle with golden light. I found the result very pleasing. I was tempted to crop about half of the image to make the eagle larger in the frame, but I wanted to show most of the nest. But I still didn't get it all in this shot. It is big! I did crop another shot to show a closer view of the eagle, and it is very sharp.
There should be babies in a matter of weeks. However, it will be difficult to see them until they get larger.

Culvert
Culvert in Clearwater Park.
I thought the light and scene framed by the culvert made for an interesting composition. Also of interest is the design of culverts. I didn't know there are such interesting and nice appearing designs.

Passing On The Left
The Pre Trail in Alton Baker Park is a wonderful place for a photo walk. As I was enjoying my walk there, a runner passed by me on the left. I quickly grabbed a shot. The lighting was nice.
The photo used here in this City of Eugene website ia also one of mine.

Lunch at Carl's Jr.
This is one of my grandsons, Levi. You might remember him as my companion on photo shoots. He started going with me on shoots at the age of three, when we would visit in Montana . He is now thirteen! Wow, how time flies! As they grow up, we grow old. Anyway, he is comfortable having my camera pointed at him. LOL
24-MAR-2015
You Turkey!
When I went up on Skinner Butte to see the eagle's nest, I also saw this beautiful wild turkey in the parking area. He was walking in my direction to get away from another person who was trying to get a picture with a cell phone. I am always amazed with the variety of colors they have.
25-MAR-2015
High Energy Drink
I came across this scene on a neighborhood walk and was immediately drawn to the juxtaposition between the drink and the warning sign. A high energy drink indeed!
It was one year ago today that I had my heart surgery! Things seem to be going well! Still have energy!

Doing Some Housekeeping
I watched a pair of Western Scrub Jays busy gathering grass and whatever else they could find, evidedntly to build their nest. Here they are working along the top of a fence bordering some condos. I thought they were an attractive couple.

Stick Your Neck Out
I immediately thought of this expression when I saw this Great Egret in a tree at Delta Ponds.
Here is what Cambridge Dictionaries Online says about the phrase - "stick your neck out: › to take a risk: I’m really sticking my neck out by investing my money in this idea."

The Middle Sister, Oregon Cascades
The Three Sisters are well-known and popular mountains that lie between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon. There is snow on the high mountains but little or none on lower elevations, where there is normally between five and seven feet of snow. Most of the ski areas are closed. However, the mountains look majestic clothed with the snow. The Middle Sister rises to just over 10,000 feet.

Outstanding in Their Field
I took a walk this afternoon and it was a warm 71 deg. F. Lots of flowers in bloom, including these pretty poppies that were out standing in their field in more ways than one! I loved the way the poppies popped out against a dark background. It was a good start for the week. -

Rock Rose - Flower in Rock Garden at Alton Baker Park
There is a small Japanese style rock garden in Alton Baker Park, and that is where I photographed this gorgeous little flower.
I learned the flower is a rock rose, and appreciate very much its beauty!

On the Fence About Catching the Black Ball
I just couldn't helping making this photograph of the glove on the fence. When I first saw it, I wondered if it was the glove I lost somewhere along the trail. But alas, it wasn't mine. So I took the shot and went on my way, amused at what I saw. Hope you see the humor in it too. :)

The Perfect Pose
It seemed almost as if my model for today's photo of the day had worked with photographers before.
The Western Scrub Jay assumed the perfect pose for this photo, at least I thought so!
The superb beauty and design I see in nature fills me with awe!
03-APR-2015
Not the Lockness Monster
Every time I pass this crooked tree in the Delta Ponds I think how unique and interesting it looks. So naturally I just had to photograph it. The way it snakes through the water reminds me of a sea monster, the Delta Ponds Monster. Like I told you, I have a good imagination! :)

Spring is Here!
I saw this beautiful floral arrangement along a brick wall in a condo yard as I walked the path along the Willamette River. I thought the arrangement of flowers was so beautiful. I couldn't resist stopping for a photo.

Out on a Limb
I went up Skinner Butte to check on the nesting bald eagles. One parent was sitting in the nest, doing nothing very interesting. There was an older gentleman sitting in a chair watching too. He had binoculars and had spotted another eagle in a tree not far from the nest. I would never have spotted it myself, because of my present eye situation and perhaps would not have otherwise. The eagle was pretty well hidden. It took me a bit to spot it. When I did I got a few shots of it when it looked the right direction. This is a crop, to about a third of the original image. Thank heavens that beautiful head stood out, its body is barely seen. I am glad I went, just to get this picture.

American Crow
According to the Cornell Lab of Orthinology - All About Birds:
"American Crows are familiar over much of the continent: large, intelligent, all-black birds with hoarse, cawing voices. They are common sights in treetops, fields, and roadsides, and in habitats ranging from open woods and empty beaches to town centers. They usually feed on the ground and eat almost anything – typically earthworms, insects and other small animals, seeds, and fruit but also garbage, carrion, and chicks they rob from nests."
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/American_Crow/id
This one landed fairly close to me at Alton Baker Park, looking for food. When one really looks closely they are quite pretty! The Crow is also an intelligent bird!

Fall Creek Above the Dam
I well remember this small gorge along Fall Creek about five miles up the creek from where I grew up. It is now at the upper end of Fall Creek Reservoir. The dam itself sits on our old property. I like to revisit the area occasionally. The rocks here are of varied composition and interesting. I hope to post compositions of the rock formations when I can.

Dogwood Blossom
Today's photo is a blossom on a Dogwood Tree in Delta Ponds.
Quote from Better Homes and Gardens: "Dogwood (Cornus) -The lovely, butterfly-like blooms of dogwoods herald the beginning of spring, and the show continues into winter with the cheery spectacle of red fruits clinging to bare branches. Dogwoods are versatile trees that do well in full sun and moist soil or shady spots. Most feature fantastic fall color in addition to the attractive blooms." -

Stopping Traffic
While sitting in the car waiting for Carol, I grabbed a shot of this young lady as she crossed Main Street.
She didn't really stop traffic, the light was red. But I thought it made a catchy title :)

Home in the Hills
I have always admired this log home at the base of the Coburg Hills.
Here, I felt the weather, with a bit of early fog, made it look even more attractive.

Two's Company, Three's a Crowd!
I suppose these two fishermen at Alton Baker Park realized there was a third fisher hiding in the shadows.
You can be sure that if they get something on their line there will be competition for the catch!
13-APR-2015
Fishing Pro
Yesterday, I posted a photo of a Great Blue Heron waiting for some fishermen to get a fish on their line. I have seen them go for the fish before the fisherman could reel it in! But the GBH is actually an expert fisher. Today's image shows it is quite capable of catching its own fish. :)

The Varied and Unique Beauty in Nature
The wonders of nature never cease to amaze me. The varied leaves on this bush are an example.
To me, the beauty and design seen in nature far surpass the creativity of us mere humans! It's the work of a Master Artist. That's why so many of us are fond of nature and wildlife photography. I just can't help loving this image!
15-APR-2015
Light on the Waters
I was on a bridge in Delta Ponds when I saw the sunlight highlight a spot in the ripples below. I thought it made a beautiful abstract.
16-APR-2015
Feeding the Kids
Like all good parents, the bald eagle pair on Skinner Butte take good care of their young. They have hungry mouths to feed! It appears that there are two fuzzy babies in the nest. Here the parent is putting something, perhaps a piece o fish, in one baby's mouth. This is a crop of about half size of a DX frame, using my D800. The scene was very contrasty.
17-APR-2015
Pretty Boy
Well, one turkey vulture is pretty to another one! :) Actually, the body of the bird looks great, a bit like an eagle. But that head is designed for a different purpose, which it fits perfectly. I have heard scavenger birds and animals described as being nature's "sanitation squad." I think they handle that job very well.
This vulture and another one flew over our heads while we were on Skinner Butte looking at the eagle's nest. They landed in trees nearby as if to keep an eye on the nest. I don't know if vultures will take baby birds from nests or not. Of course, one of the parents was in the nest with the fleglings, so we didn't find out.
18-APR-2015
Blossoms on Green
I loved the green background when I spotted these blossoms on a neighborhood tree! I thought it made a pretty picture
19-APR-2015
Three in One
First of all, let me assure you that this is not a multiple exposure, It is a single shot of three Canada Geese landing on the canal in Alton Baker Park, even though it does look like three shots of a single goose made in to one. I was pleased to get them all in a single shot.
20-APR-2015
Have a Drink!
In the same building where Carol has her blood checked, is a really nice deli. We stopped by, since we were a bit early, to have a latte. Right there, begging me to shoot their picture, were these wine and beer glasses. I obliged, so here they are in all their glory. :)
21-APR-2015
Creative Yard Art
This display of skis on the side of a shed in a neighborhood yard is eye catching. Someone has to be a fan of winter sports and have a creative eye. The display was framed by a white border and is nicely done. How the skeleton of a fish fits in, I don't know. Those aren't water skis. :)
Still not feeling well, so this is a shot from another day.

Build me Up, Buttercup!
I don't know exactly why this image of these three flowers reminds me of the song, Build me up, Buttercup!
Anyway, I guess it must be the yellow color. Don't know what they are (my guess was tulips), but I think they are gorgeous.

Storm Clouds Over Eugene
We had some warm sunny days earlier in the week. But now the storm clouds have returned and it's been raining. Sometimes the stormy weather makes for a nice photograph. This is a scene of downtown Eugene looking south toward Spencer Butte. I was impressed by the heavy clouds coming from the south.
24-APR-2015
Pretty Landscaping
This is a scene from a beautifully landscaped yard I saw on a walk. Lots of pretty flowers and shrubs.
26-APR-2015
Parent and Child
I love the fact that we have a bald eagle's nest on Skinner Butte in the heart of Eugene, and like to visit when I can. Here, along with the parent Bald Eagle, you can see one of two babies, a little fur ball. Even though it hasn't yet developed feathers, its beak seems to be pretty impressive already! I would have loved using a longer lens than the old model Nikkor 80-400 VR I used, but that means a really long one, at least 1000mm! I shot the image in DX mode, so it would be like using a 600mm lens. It is a long way out to that nest! Considering that this is a crop of a DX miage, and it means it is about a quarter or less of the original of a full frame, I consider it to be a pretty good result.

Delta Ponds - Great For Photographers
Take a walk in Delta Ponds and you will usually see some photographers along the way. I find it a great place for photographers to get good photographs of wildlife. And to think that it all started out as gravel pits for use when the I-5 freeway was built! Eugene Parks came into possession of these areas along the Willamette River and began a project to remake them into several interconnected ponds. They were highly successful and won an award from the State of Oregon for their work. Delta Ponds is now a most enjoyable place to walk and photograph.
The second photo in the article, of the heron, is one of mine.

If The Shoe Fits.....?
I have a new project, women's shoes. :) No, not to wear, to photograph those that are unique and unusual that I see in store windows, etc.
Here is a pair for you. If they fit, would you wear them?
28-APR-2015
Downy Woodpecker
It was a thrill to see this beautiful bird on top of Skinner Butte. I don't get a chance to see many woodpeckers, though at times I can hear them in the trees. This one happened to be in a tree above the walkway I was on. Shooting upward into the tree created a busy background, which I felt was fitting.
29-APR-2015
Trillium Growing Wild on Skinner Butte
This beautiful flower, which looks much like the white Trillium, was growing wild up on Skinner Butte. I am told the color comes on after the white in a later stage. (Thanks Carl, and others.) It is sure a most lovely flower.

Family Security System
Geese are very protective of their young. Even though I was up a bank a little ways from the water, these adult geese got into a defensive mode while keeping their young goslings between them. Nice to see parents looking after their children so well.
Well, there is always one kid in the bunch that is more difficult to look after :)

Camouflaged Leaf
I found this leaf in our driveway and was immediately struck by the variety of colors.
It looked like it was dressed in camouflaged clothing, unusual colors for this time of year.

This is a three shot panorama of the north pond at Delta Ponds, taken from the north side of the pond looking south.
It's great to have this area within the city limits of Eugene.

With a Song in My Heart
This pretty Delta Ponds resident was making beautiful music, entertaining all who listened. I think it is a Red-winged Blackbird. Did you ever notice that they don't sing off-key like we sometimes do? :)

Willamette River East of Clearwater Park
I was told about a non-established trail that runs along the Willamette River from Clearwater Park and decided to walk it a ways. This is a view of the river from along the trail. I look forward to exploring it more.

Fringed Tulip - Like The Frosting on a Cake!
I saw this flower on a walk around town. Don't know what it is, but it is one of the most beautiful and unique flowers I have seen. The white spikes on the end of the petals is like the frosting on the cake. It puts the finishing touch on the unusual flower. I just couldn't resist taking an image of it home with me. So I now share it with you. :)
07-MAY-2015
Birdbath
This colorful, unique birdbath is in a yard around town. It drew my attention because it seemed like something out of a fantasy world. I could see this scene in a Disney movie, like Sleeping Beauty, or something like that. I find it to be a dreamlike image, but that is probably just me.
08-MAY-2015
The Little Rascals Are Sure Growing!
I thought I would check on the bald eagle nest on Skinner Butte and the two eaglets. One parent was sitting on a branch toward the top of the tree. The little rascals are sure growing! Of course, they have a lot of growing to do. They are still fuzzy balls, no feathers yet. This shot of them in the nest has been cropped a good bit so we can get a better view of the little ones. The baby on the right is quite a bit darker than the other, and bigger.
It was nice to have some morning sun on the nest, which helped. Most of the few days I have been able to get up there have been cloudy and dark. What is unique about our viewing spot on top of Skinner Butte is that we are at the same level as the nest, even though it is high in a tall Fir Tree. So from that vantage point we are able to see the chicks in the nest.

The Hayden Bridge Victorian
The Hayden Bridge Victorian home on Yolanda Street in Springfield, OR, was built in 1890. It's history is quite interesting. "The home is on an acre of land that was once part of the Felix Scott, Jr land grant from the U.S. government. The 4 acres filbert orchard adjoining the home is part of a similar grant to his father, Captain Felix Scott, Sr. (1786-1858)." Quote from -

Wood Duck on Wood!
I have never seen Wood Ducks anywhere but in the water or by the water's edge. That is, until I saw this one sitting on a branch in Delta Ponds. And it was pretty high up in this old dead snag at that. Naturally, I had to get a shot of that!

Running On the Pre Trail
I wanted to get a photo of a runner on the Pre Trail where it passes Autzen Stadium. I liked the composition from that point of view. It is a very nice trail for runners and walkers alike, and is kept in such nice condition. I was pleased with the result. For more information about the trail, see -
https://www.eugene-or.gov/index.aspx?NID=1727 By the way, the photo on this web page, of the runners, is one of mine.
I had an interesting experience in regard to that photo. I got an email from a relative of the gentleman in front on the right. He had passed away and the correspondent wanted to use my photo at his memorial service. Of course, I happily agreed!

Flight Training
Looks like our young bald eagles are testing their wing, getting in some flight training for the coming day when they take their first solo flight. They are growing fast and putting on feathers. Notice also the changes in color. Before we know it, they will be leaving the nest. I am grateful for the opportunity to watch them from the top of Skinner Butte. An Intruder in Our Yard
I looked outside and saw that another heron had landed in our yard. I suspected a plot, and sure enough Carol had ordered another heron for me, for our anniversary. Pretty little thing, don't you think, with those feathers all fluffed up?

Thistle - "The Flower of Scotland"
If we get thorns and thistles in our yard, we are displeased and consider them a nuisance. If we see a thistle in the wild, it can be a real beauty, as I think this one is!
It's interesting that in 1869 Hans Christian Anderson wrote a nice little tale about the thistle, called "The Thistle’s Experiences." In that story, one of the characters calls the thistle, 'the flower of Scotland.' If you would like to read this short story, go here:

Sturnus vulgaris (The European Starling)
The European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) was first brought to the United States in 1890. It is now common throughout the country and is abundant in many areas. While many view it as a pest, the Starling wins our grudging admiration for its adaptability, toughness, and seeming intelligence. It is commonly found in cities, parks, farms, open groves, and fields. The Starlings have had a negative impact on some native hole-nesting birds, such as bluebirds and Red-headed Woodpeckers, competing with them for nesting sites. (Information from: Audubon Guide to North American Birds -
http://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/european-starling )
If you wonder about the red background, it is the side of a pickup. The bird is on a fence in front of it.

Catch The Bus!
I learned that in recent years, the UK has what is called 'Catch The Bus Week'. This year it runs from June 29th through July 5th. In the Eugene/Springfield area, the considerate bus operators hold for a person running to catch the bus. That's what I did back in the day when I was a bus operator. I saw that happen this morning as a young lady ran by me to get to the bus before it left. The kindly driver waited. Bravo!

"Jewel of the Pond"
I saw this water lily in a small pond in the landscaping of an apartment complex. The water lily has been called the 'jewel of the pond'. It is quite elegant, yet serve a valuable purpose in the ecosystem of a pond. You can read about its beauty and benefits here:
http://theponddigger.com/water-lilies.php
The US Post Office recently issued four stamps picturing water lilies. Each stamp depicts a close-up of the flower of one of four classic garden water lilies. See:

Ready to Ride!
These bike riders met at Alton Baker Park for a group ride along the Riverbank Trail. It's a great place to ride or take a walk, as I do with my camera. Eugene has an excellent network of bike paths and lanes. Bike riding is popular here.
"Eugene's growing bicycle network includes:
42 miles of shared-use paths,
81 miles of on-street bicycle lanes,
35 miles of signed bikeways, and
5 bicycle/pedestrian bridges spanning the Willamette River
2 bicycle/pedestrian bridges spanning major roads or highways"

The Sentinel
A meaning of the word, sentinel, is 'To watch over as a guard'. That surely is fitting for this photo. The bald eagle parent is perched at the top of the tree above its nest, where it can stand guard over the nest and the fledglings in it. I liked its pose and the way the tree top is bent under its weight.

Strut Your Stuff!
Pigeons, ducks and geese are plentiful along the waterway at Alton Baker Park. This Rock Pigeon, seemed to be so sure if itself, all decked out in such beautiful colors. I found this information about Rock Pigeons:
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rock_Pigeon/id
"Color Pattern - Variable in color, but most birds are bluish gray with two black bands on the wing and a black tip to the tail. Most birds have iridescent throat feathers. Wing patterns may include two bars, dark spots, or can be plain. The tail is usually dark tipped."
I am continually in awe of the beauty and design found everywhere in nature. We humans can only copy such superior design. To me it is evidence of superior wisdom.

The Pollinator!
According to the USDA, bees are the champion pollinators! Here is some evidence of their effectiveness. This bee's hind legs are heavily coated with pollen, and it didn't seem to be done yet! I thought it looked beautiful against this brightly colored flower! Photo made at Alton Baker Park.
This is my last post before surgery. I will have my eye surgery tomorrow morning. The doctor has told me that recovery is four to six weeks. But I hope I can get on the computer before very long. Carol will be checking my mail. Thanks for looking at today's photo!

The Patient's Patch
Vern received good news from his Doctor today. This was his one week after surgery appointment. The Doctor said all looks good. We are to continue his medication routine until we see the doctor again next month, & he must wear the patch over his eye while he sleeps for 6 weeks. One of the drops is to keep the eye from rejecting the cornea. His vision has improved in the past week and he is seeing as well as he did before surgery. Vern is a good patient! He is anxiously waiting to get out on his photo shoots again. :)
Best wishes,
Carol

Found a bird to pose for me!
Being a bit slowed down at present, I was able to find a bird that would stand still long enough to pose for me. Hard to identify, anyone know the ID? :) I learned that "Her name is Jewel - she's a blue parrot from the movie "Rio" put out by Blue Sky Studio" (thanks Laura)
My eye seems to be recovering well, though a slow process. I am beginning to sit in front of the computer a bit at a time. The concern for the first month and a half is to keep the eye from rejecting the cornea. It was heartwarming to get all the kind well wishes. Thank you!

Carol called my attention to the first daylily bloom in our backyard today. So I did the best thing I knew how. I shot it! Can you find the tiny ant in it? I noticed it when processing the image. Eyesight is improving!

A Lot of Fluff
I watched this robin for a bit last month, as it sat on a tree limb in Delta Ponds. When if fluffed its feathers I thought it was a good opportunity to get a different look. It certainly is!

Neighborhood Tree Carving
There is a bare tree in a local neighborhood yard that has been turned into an art piece. Someone did a great job of carving animals and birds into the tree. Among the carvings is this black bear and cub. In the right light I could see this causing concern for a person walking by. :) Also found on the tree are an owl, raccoon, rabbit and barking dog. All are very well done.

Splinter Owl
This appears to be a new, or old, type of owl, of the wood variety. This one happens to be another of the carvings in the neighborhood tree that was also featured in yesterday's PAD. I posted a small gallery of images of the tree carvings -
http://www.pbase.com/fotabug/neighborhood_tree_carving
I recall another owl, in Montana, that I cautiously approached so as to not scare it away, only to find that it wasn't going anywhere. It turned out to be of the same variety. I looked around sheepishly to see if anyone had seen me. Fortunately, no one had. :)

A Bird in Hand!
I have been somewhat restricted to home because of a strong sensitivity to light, caused by several drops I take four times a day. Sometimes I am forced to sit in a darkened room to rest the eye. As a result, my photo subjects are few. I decided to play with one of Carol's birds and try putting it in one of her houseplants just for fun. Here is the result, nothing great but some fun for me.

Queen of the Climbers
"Clematis are prized for their incredible flowers, some as large as a saucer. Known as the 'Queen of the Climbers', Clematis plants will train onto trellises and fences, or arch gracefully over doorways. They are absolutely stunning when used alone or when several different colored varieties are mixed." - Quote from:

We have this bar with a glass top, and Carol has this martini glass sitting on it. I thought it would make a good image. How about you?

True Tolerance
Miko the Magnificent is the picture of true toleration. He really doesn't care to have his picture taken. But it isn't worth any exertion to move, so he just keeps a wary eye on the photographer.

It's Curtains For You!
Just something else I found around the house. I liked the pattern made by the fringe at the top.
So it wasn't the curtains themselves but rather the lines, shapes and tones made by them that attracted me. I tried to make that stand out about it

I saw this old carriage in a neighborhood yard. It looks like it is in pretty good shape even though it sits out in the weather. No horse in sight. :)

Wild Rose, Provincial Flower of Alberta
The "Rosa acicularis, also known as the prickly wild rose, the prickly rose, the bristly rose and the Arctic rose, is a species of wild rose with a Holarctic distribution in northern regions of Asia, Europe, and North America." -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_acicularis
My grandfather homesteaded on a large farm in Clyde, Alberta, where my father and six siblings grew up. I was able to visit there only once, and met uncles and cousins who lived there as well. My father and mother moved to Olympia Washington shortly before I was born. I didn't know the 'prickly wild rose' was the provincial flower of Alberta until I saw it online.

Farm Equipment - Dorris Ranch
I always enjoy walks at Dorris Ranch, one of the Willamalane parks in Springfield. I found this scene very appealing. Though a park, Dorris Ranch still has a working filbert (hazelnut) orchard that lies beyond the trees.

On The Pond
This pond in Alton Baker Park is one of my favorite places to look for birds of various kinds. I have seen several varieties of ducks, herons, cormorants, egrets, osprey and some other kinds of birds there at different times. Unfortunately, on this day only geese were on the pond! But yes, they are ok too!

Day Lily in the Light of Day
I just couldn't resist posting this photo of the daylily in our backyard. It is such a beautiful plant with lots of individual flowers on it. Of course, with the heat wave we are having, I have to give it a bit of water every day. It is rewarding me! (Carol held a black poster board up for the background)

Dating Days
Another blast from the past for you - this is Carol and me behind a figure prop for photos at the Oregon State Fair in September 1960, eight months before we were married. The only picture we have is the print we bought from the photographer. So this is a copy of that print. Thanks very much to Roy, who made it presentable for us!

Love at First Bite!
At first, it appeared that these geese had issues of right-a-way! More likely it is attraction that set them on course.
I loved their poses and the great color in the water. This scene is at Delta Ponds.

Getting to the Heart of the Matter
The center of this dogwood blossom looks like a berry, and that's what really attracted me. It's what I wanted to be the center of interest.
I hope that is what draws your attention.

"Not a fish! I am so embarrassed!"
Well, I had to think of some title to get your attention! You were dozing! LOL Did I ever tell you? I love herons!

In All Its Glory!
After I watered the 'mound' (what we call a raised area for flowers and groundcover), I checked out our day lilies soaking up the moisture. This one was brightened by sunlight and the water drops stood out beautifully. I just had to capture it in all its glory!

Handcut Gemstones by John
While visiting our friends, John and Marty, I grabbed a shot of some of the gemstones John had brought home from his shop, JDC Gem. The photo was done with a little P&S. I would like to shoot more sometime with one of my better cameras. John sells his gemstones on Etsy, and it is interesting to take a look at all the beautiful stones he has there -

Splash of Color
I have always thought this flower to be one of the prettiest. The name escapes me, but that doesn't keep me from admiring it. This one was in a great setting, if you like lots of color that is! I was hoping to hear the splash of rain today, but this splash of color will have to do. Ah yes, it's a Columbine. Thanks everyone!

Just Hanging Around
It was a treat to visit Delta Ponds again after a layoff due to surgery. The Great Blue Herons were there in numbers, and some Green Herons too. I also saw some Greater Yellow Legs and even a Mink! The bullfrogs also seemed to be more plentiful. I think they liked hiding in the dark plants growing underwater. This one seems to be saying, 'here's looking at you!'
By the way, the white around its mouth is where its head breaks the water, just in case you wondered. :)

Bee on Cone Flower (echinacea)
A pretty neighborhood yard with lots of flowers also had a lot of bees, busily flying from flower to flower. I tried to catch one on a flower and succeeded with this one. I was shooting handheld, so was pleased with the result. Hope you like it too! :)

Consider How The Lilies Grow
I was completely in awe of the beauty of this Oriental Lily in a neighborhood yard. The beauty and design is simply stunning. The homeowner, Debra, kindly showed me around her yard, and let me photograph there.
The lily reminded me of a Bible verse - (Luke 12:27) "Consider how the lilies grow: They neither toil nor spin; but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these."

Something to Cool You Down
I had forgotten about this frosty morning view of a nearby lumber mill from early this year. The low directional sunlight gave it an added taste of color. I thought it was very pleasing, something that can't always be said about a mill. I found it good to look at on this warm day!

Delectable Dahlia
I almost decided that dahlias are my favorite flower, but not quite! This one does raise the bar for me, however. It is a gorgeous example, from Debra's yard. But then I think of Oriental Lilies, orchids and some other outstanding flowers and I waver. Let's just say that I love all flowers, including the wild ones and even the weeds, like the daisy, etc. The dahlia has to be near the top of the list.

Retirement, 13 Years and Counting!
My good friend, Hank, and I retired on July 12th, thirteen years ago. Ever since, we meet for breakfast on or close to that same date every year to celebrate. Today was the day this year! We have a great time and usually spend two to three hours getting up to date with each other and recalling old times. Hank is a funny guy, and the conversation is filled with laughter. So here we are in all our glory (I am the guy on the left, in case you don't know)!
Thanks to our neat waitress, Ingrid at Elmer's, who shot the picture for us.

Tainted Beauty
This lovely flower is showing its age. Like all of us older ones, it is getting a bit rough around the edges. :) But yet, I find its beauty quite compelling! The flowers are now in full bloom and a few of them are already gone. But each and every one has its own personality and appeal.

John Got Married!
The day finally arrived! My photo shooting buddy, John, got married. I just couldn't refuse his request that I shoot pictures at his wedding, even though I told him I was much more comfortable shooting the Great Blue Heron. If my pictures don't turn out, the heron never complains or is displeased with what I do, unless I get too close. Then it will fly away. In the case of the wedding, since I am not a great people photographer, I was the one who felt like flying away! LOL But how could I refuse John? I hope he will be happy with my humble efforts. This shot reflects the happiness of the newly married couple, John and Violet, as they take the walk down the aisle after the ceremony.

The Calla Lily That Isn't
Did you know that the Calla Lily is neither a Calla or a Lily?
Here is some interesting information about the Calla Lily at www.CallaLilyGuide.com:
"The calla lily originates from the southern parts of Africa, namely South Africa up to the country Malawi, which is positioned in alignment with the northern border of the African island Madagascar. This area has a tropical climate in which the calla lily really finds itself at home with a steady temperature, rainy seasons and dry seasons..........."
"The name of the calla lily is not only just a common name that never is used professionally, it is also totally misinformative since the calla lily is neither a calla nor a lily............"

Hey, Little Green Heron, I don't know if I would stalk that prey!
This little Green Heron seems to be stalking a Pond Turtle on a log, as if it were prey. In truth, I think it was really trying to chase it away, because the turtle left and the heron took over the log. Just some fun that goes on at Delta Ponds. Also, something in this photo tickles my fancy. Can you tell what it is? :)

Bareback Fishing
As I walked the Riverbank Trail, I noticed this bare backed fisherman across the Willamette River. Others found that a good spot also, or else they were waiting for the fisherman. You can't really see it in the photo but he has some interesting tattoo's on his chest. I don't know if he caught anything, didn't wait around. I had walking to do! :)

On-duty Osprey
Once again this year, the osprey have a nest on top of the floodlights on a practice field of the University of Oregon. I could see wings in the nest, as the young ones exercised. This is one of the parents who is standing by to watch over the family. You can tell it takes its job seriously! The photo was shot with my old mint Nikon D1x, using a Nikkor 18-300 zoom. The image had to be cropped by quite a bit. I could have used a longer lens!

The Beautiful Days of Summer
We all look forward to summer when, as they say, the living is easy. I thought this scene along the Willamette River near Delta Ponds typifies summer well. All it needs is some people! And the bench along the shore beckons one to take a seat and quietly contemplate the pleasures of the surroundings.

I just couldn't pass up photographing this raving beauty! I love the black center set off by the bright red petals. Lovely to look at.

Male and Female Ring-Necked Ducks
My Birds of Oregon book says, "Visits to secluded ponds during the colder months will soon reveal Ring-Necked Ducks." These ducks must be confused! It is surely not winter or is it cold! We are having a hot dry spell in Oregon. So I feel fortunate to have seen this group in Alton Baker Park. I don't know where they got the name. I don't really see a ring around their necks.

A Good reason for Liking Dragonflies!
This Twelve-Spotted Skimmer is the only dragonfly I have seen sitting still this year! Of course, I was out of commission for a while so couldn't visit my favorite haunts where I usually see them. I was pleased that it posed for me long enough to get a picture, even if it was a bit farther away than I wanted, so it's a cropped image.
Something that makes the dragonfly even more appealing: "Many people ask, "What do dragonflies eat?" As adults, dragonflies eat other insects and can consume hundreds of mosquitoes in one day! typically eat mosquitoes and other small insects. They are valued as predators, since they help control populations of harmful insects. Dragonflies are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Adult dragonflies do not bite or sting humans, though nymphs are capable of delivering a painful but harmless bite." (

Anything that consumes hundreds of mosquitoes in one day you just have to like!

Beauty Along Skinner Butte Trail
The trail up the north side of Skinner Butte is a beautiful hike. There are some tall fir trees and lots of growth beneath them, including flowers like this one. I thought the light on the flower and the green leaves made such a pleasing combination. Couldn't resist a shot.

The Last Laugh
This heron in Delta Ponds certainly looks like it is having the last laugh. But more likely it is complaining, maybe about me taking the picture. Anyway, I thought it made a fine picture. But then I love herons! :)

Seven and Counting
Seven years ago, I photographed Mark and Dorlee's wedding. It was the one time I thought I did a good job of it. We thought that a seven year anniversary photo would be nice. We were able to do it today, a couple weeks past their anniversary (July 25th). They picked my favorite park, Alton Baker, for the setting. I think you can tell they are the nicest folks!

What are they?
I am not sure about this pair. I don't see an exact match in my Birds of Oregon book, but would guess they are some sort of Sandpiper. Right? Sure would appreciate a positive ID.

Intense Look
I love these guys. They always have such an intense look about them. I guess being on the lookout for something to eat all the time would give one that kind of look. Though they are great hunters, Bald Eagles are also the worst kind of thieves. :) They love to steal food from other birds of prey. This one was hanging out at Delta Ponds.

Don't be Afraid to Stick Your Neck Out!
Sometimes if you want to get ahead you need to stick your neck out. If this Green Heron at Delta Ponds wasn't willing to do that it would not be very good at fishing, which it is! I really liked this pose, typical of the bird when it is about to strike.

Chapala Mexican Restaurant Mural
I met a young friend, Justin, for a photo walk and lunch today. He moved from here a few years ago and now lives in Albany, about 45 minutes away. We ate at a great Mexican restaurant, called Chapala (

A Very Little Waterfall
Even though this little waterfall was small, it still was a thing of beauty to me. It was in Jasper, a small town near Springfield, where I live. I also liked the little circles of light reflecting from the water. I found it a pleasing view. I lost the data for the image, so I don't know when I shot it.

On Today's Menu
As I watched, this Green Heron jumped into the water and back on this stump with its catch. They are so fast! At least I caught it with the catch in its beak, but it wasn't long before it swallowed its meal. It's interesting how little green is on the Green Heron, just a hint of green in the wings and green on top of its head. The image was made at Delta Ponds.

A Regal Rose
Here is another beautiful rose from the Owens Rose Garden, such a pretty place this time of year! I love wandering there. And I am always looking for a sunlit rose against a shady background that can fade into darkness behind the rose, making it jump out at the viewer. Hopefully, this one does that to you. :)

Aerial Combat
For some reason, the Great Blue Herons at Delta Ponds don't want the Great Egrets sharing their spots in the ponds. They often chase them away, and that is actually what is happening here. The Great Egrets, though the same size, don't fight back. They just fly away. It almost looks like a mid-air collision. And there were spectators too, the duck and me! :)

Immature American Robin
The markings on this bird seen at Delta Ponds can be confusing. It looks a bit like a Wood Thrush, but more like an immature American Robin. Check out this comparison -
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Wood_Thrush/id The spots on the chest and the white stripe on its throat were unlike robins I am used to seeing. The shot of the same bird below looks more like a robin, though I don't recall seeing the dark patch on the cheek before. Since we don't have the Wood Thrush here in Oregon, it was easy to conclude it was an immature Robin.

Today's Selfie - Eye See You!
We spent over three hours at the Casey Eye Institute today, much of it getting photographs made of the eye to gauge the size of the growth and check on overall condition of the eye. Reports were good! But there was also considerable time spent waiting. Had my little V1 with me and spent time looking around for likely subjects. In the restroom mirror I found one, me! So, here you go, my selfie for today. :) I liked it better in B&W.

Strange Looking Sky In The West
On our way home from Portland last night, I saw this view of the sky as a slit of light broke through the dark clouds and smoke. The sky was heavy with smoke from all the fires going on now. The narrow bending column almost made me think of s funnel cloud, that could become a tornado if it touched the ground. It probably was just a strange cloud formation, unlike any I have seen before. But I am no meteorologist, so I can't explain what was going on. I was fortunate to get a shot of it from a fast moving car. No, I wasn't driving. :)

One Never Know Who They Might Meet on a Walk!
On a neighborhood walk, I came across this cutie in an elementary school field. Possibly, it could have got out of someone's yard. It didn't seem too much afraid of me. But then maybe it could see that I am harmless! Anyway, it stayed still just long enough to pose for me. I loved the color of its fur!

Kingfisher Stopped in Mid-flight!
What a fine day! I got lots of nice shots at Delta Ponds! I was especially excited to get a shot of the elusive Kingfisher in mid-flight! I have enough trouble seeing those speedsters. But, today I even got a few shots of this one on a stump with a small fish in its beak! It was on the other side of the pond, so a little too far away. I will get to that shot later and see if I got it.
Besides this, I shot the usual Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Great Egret, Cormorant and Western Scrub Jay. Also captured a Greater Yellowlegs, Wood Duck, and Black Capped Chickadee, besides a few others. The water is sure getting low, however. Hope the birds don't desert us!

"The Precocious Killdeer"
One can learn some interesting things about the Killdeer online. Almost as soon as they hatch, they follow their parents, scurrying around searching for something to eat. Even though they can't fly and need their parents, they have a bit of an independent air about them. Though it is a shorebird, of the Plover family, the Killdeer can be found in many places far from the shore. They are also quite skilled at a broken wing routine used to draw attention away from their babies. Yes, precocious is a good description for the Killdeer! :)

A Cascade of Water
There is a new apartment building near the Riverbank Trail along the Willamette River, and it has a neat fountain, a real cascade of water! I have been thinking about how I could photograph it to show its size and beauty. I thought the early morning directional lighting would make it stand out.

An L of a Tree!
This tree along the Willamette River, near Clearwater Park, fascinated me with its strange shape, which I saw as a letter 'L'. I thought you might find it interesting too! Ok, it's also a 'C'. LC stands for 'let's celebrate'! :)
I am not sure what the tree is, although Poplar trees do grow abundantly along waterways here. Not so sure that's what it is, however.

Lupine, a Legume
"Lupine, a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. The genus includes over 200 species, with centers of diversity in North and South America.[2] Smaller centers occur in North Africa and the Mediterranean.[2][3] Seeds of various species of lupins have been used as a food for over 3000 years around the Mediterranean (Gladstones, 1970) and for as much as 6000 years in the Andean highlands (Uauy et al., 1995), but they have never been accorded the same status as soybeans or dry peas and other pulse crops" (Wikipedia)

River Rock Art
Every summer, along the Willamette River below the Frohnmayer Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge, university students take to the shallow water to create some artwork with the river rocks. This is a small sample of what they do. It's fun to walk the bridge just to see what they have done.

Water Strider
I remember that when I was a youngster, an uncle of mine offered a buddy and I a nickel for each one we caught if we could catch these as they walked on the water. We knew them just as skippers. My uncle soon withdrew his offer when we started catching too many of them. No way could I catch one now!

The Odd Couple
I had to chuckle when I saw this Green Heron on the log with the Red-eared Slider. They don't seem to be what we would expect to see together out there in Delta Ponds.
"Red-eared sliders get their name from the small red stripe around their ears. The "slider" part of their name comes from their ability to slide off rocks and logs and into the water quickly. This species was previously known as Troost's turtle in honor of an American herpetologist...." (Wikipedia) They are not native to this area.

Nice Catch!
I saw this Osprey toward the other side of the Willamette River and wasn't sure why it was out there. With the D7100 and 80-400 VR, I could see it had a catch, a pretty large fish.
I wondered if it was in a position like another Osprey I saw in Delta Ponds a couple or more years ago. That one was along the bank of a pond with a huge fish, and it was trying to fly across the pond with it. The fish was too heavy. It struggled along across the pond and finally made it to the other side. Trouble was that over there it was soon surrounded by Turkey Vultures just waiting for it to leave the fish. The Osprey stayed there feeding on what it could before the inevitable, when the vultures would close in and share the meal.

Sidewalk Art
Recently, Springfield had a Chalk Fest, featuring some sidewalk art. I was able to get down there a few days after the event and shot pictures of some of the sidewalk art. I was especially impressed with this one because of the 3-D effect it gave. Hopefully, I can post a folder of the other artwork at some point.

Territorial Rights
A Great Blue Heron keeps a watchful eye on a Great Egret in the Delta Ponds. The herons are here year round, even nesting in trees near Delta Ponds and also Alton Baker park, while the egrets only stop by during Spring and Summer. So I think the herons believe the ponds are theirs. They make it very clear most of the time as they will chase the egrets off in their favorite spots. It is fun to watch the interaction between them.

Double Vision
I have had a bit of double vision since my eye surgery, but I don't think it is anything serious. That is, unless I am the only one seeing double in this image! :)
I went back to Delta Ponds today and got this shot of an egret as it landed in another spot for fishing. I really liked the reflection.

My Journey to the Top of Spencer Butte
This was a real accomplishment for me! It's been nine years since I climbed to the top of Spencer Butte. I last did it six days after turning 70. Now, at 79, I made it again today. I was invited to the dedication of the newly rebuilt trail to the top. My day start out wrong as I was late in leaving home and knew I wouldn't make the event, at the tree line at the top. Traffic was heavy, making me later still. So when I got to the parking lot out South Willamette Street, I was later still. For some mistaken reason, I thought the climb was a lot shorter than it turned out to be. I left the parking lot at 1:00 PM and didn't make it to the top till 3:00. It was a climb of over three miles. I was extremely tired when I made it to the top. It was too late for the open house at the top, but I made it!
Now, the return trip wasn't going to be any shorter, as I had the same route to follow back. I thought it would be easier going downhill much of the time. But holding yourself back is still strenuous. So I got very tired, to the point of rubbery legs and feeling a bit wobbly. I had to sit down several times the last mile to rest. Once, I even fell asleep and my elbow slipping on my knee woke me up. That refreshed me enough to continue on. The last half mile included more rest stops and and a final descent to the parking lot.
I was so hungry and thirsty that I stopped on the way home to have a hamburger, and reward myself with a chocolate milkshake. I think that may be my last attempt at the 2000 feet elevation Spencer Butte!

Beautiful Young Blacktail
While on my hike to the top of Spencer Butte I came across this young Blacktail spike in the middle of the trail. Unfortunately, I had a wide angle lens on the camera. So I had to work my way up close to the deer. I even talked to it as I got closer. The young buck didn't seem bothered by my presence. I finally got close enough to get some pictures, just before a couple hikers came walking and talking from the other direction, scaring the deer away. I love any experience I have with the lovable, gentle deer. Just call me the 'deer whisperer'.

Angie's Purse
I know! I was stretching for a subject. LOL But I liked how our daughter's purse looked sitting on the floor of our car.
So here it is in all its glory, western style!

The Rose, a Flower That Inspires Us!
Did you know that the rose is the favorite flower of 85% of Americans? And it inspires us to song and verse, some 4,000 songs being written about the rose. Shakespeare referred to roses over 400 times in his writings. And roses have long inspired love and always added beauty to the lives of those who have received them. And how many of us have roses in our yards or gardens? Yes, the rose is an inspirational beauty of nature!

Greater Yellowlegs, I think!
This pair of shorebirds was feeding in the shallow water of Delta Ponds when I came by. The water took on a white color as it reflected the clouds and make a nice background for the birds. I am pretty sure the one on the left is a Greater Yellowlegs, the one on the right is a Long-billed Dowitcher.

Oregon Dark Eyed Junco
I learned that there are several variations of the Junco, a beautiful little bird. This one is known as the Oregon Dark Eyed Junco. It's a subspecies of the Dark Eyed Junco.

Dedication Day on top of Spencer Butte
You might remember my PAD and story last Friday when I hiked 6 miles up and back down Spencer Butte. It was a very tough day. See the story accompanying my 9/11 PAD. I doubted I would make the climb again. Well, that thought lasted less than a week! The dedication of the rebuilt trail to the top was today, instead of last week as I thought. I just couldn't miss it and an opportunity to see Carrie and Kelly, my friends at Eugene Parks, which hosted the event. So I did it again, this time with my friend, John! This time I found a much shorter route. So I hiked about 2 miles instead of 6, but still a very steep climb. Anyway, I made it and enjoyed spending some time at the top.
What was accomplished in this project is amazing! There is a beautiful trail and some stone steps up there near the top, where I got lost for a bit several years back. The trail at the top then was indistinct and unmarked. Now it is wonderful, a real credit to Eugene Parks and Open Spaces! My photo today shows some of those who worked on this project as they got ready to pose for the photographer in the foreground.
The other photo shown is of a group heading for the top after the dedication program. There was a steady flow of visitors on the trail today!
And hey, I made it twice in the last couple weeks! Not bad for 79! The moral of the story is - never say, 'never again'!

Everyone Loves Lupines!
Do a search on the Internet and you will find many references to this admired flower. It seems to be a favorite, whether in the wild or in gardens. I saw this one in a flower garden along the Riverbank Trail.

View of Eugene From Top of Spencer Butte
I liked this scene of a couple enjoying the view, looking north over Eugene from the top of Spencer Butte. It seems like the top of the world up there, though the butte is only 2050 feet high.

One of Our Beautiful Granddaughters
Our granddaughter wanted me to shoot some pictures of her in costumes of characters she created on her blog. I shot a number of photos, mostly of different full length poses, but was taken with her eyes in this image. She makes me think of a Disney model here.
A shot of Carol shooting her picture with an iPad is here:

The Colorful Downy Woodpecker
I am always thrilled to see any woodpecker as I find them elusive. I often hear them in trees on my photo walks, especially along the rivers or in wooded areas around ponds and elsewhere. The colorful Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America and common and widespread, except in the arid southwest. This little beauty was seen at Delta Ponds this morning.

A Beauty in the Spotlight
I thought all the elements of this image fit together well in just the right kind of light to give the appearance of a graceful performer in center stage! The pose of the Great Egret and the rings in the water, plus the lighting, made me want to applaud the performer. And the egret did have something to dance about! When I brought the full sized image up on the big screen of my monitor I could see the tailfins of a fish. That's why its mouth looks that way. It hasn't quite got all of the fish in its throat. But it soon went down and the performance was over. It took place at Delta Ponds.

My Favorite Gardener
We put in a garden this year, a few things like tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini. And then we had plenty of delicious grapes too. They all taste so much better home grown! Or was it the pretty green thumb of my now 73 year old wife? She diligently watered the garden, while I took care of the rest of the watering. I think it was her magic touch that made the plants flourish. Here she is, delighted with another load of produce!
I am listening to the song, 'You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings' by Roger Whittaker, a fitting song for my little lady -

Is there Trouble in the Wood Duck Family?
I saw this Wood Duck pair at Delta Ponds and it looked like the male was giving some serious feedback to the female. Perhaps she was too nice to the other male nearby, who knows. He doesn't look too happy. But then, maybe I am misreading the situation. I couldn't hear what he was saying. :)

Fern in Focus
Ferns are plentiful in Oregon forests. They beautify the forest floor, carpeting it in lush green. I love the fern and when I saw this fern focused with sunlight I had to make a photo of it. I like the result. Photo made at Delta Ponds.

Northwest Tree Hugger
This little guy at Delta Ponds was just curious enough to stop and allow me a couple photos before he scampered on up the tree. I thought it made a nice portrait.

Path Through the Scotch Broom
Scotch Broom is a pretty bush, especially when in bloom. But it has spread widely in Oregon and Washington during my lifetime. I was interested in its history in Oregon and learned some interesting things.
"Scotch broom was widely planted in Western Oregon for dune
stabilization and as an ornamental along highway corridors. It is now the most
extensive forest weed species and a significant source of pollen effecting allergy
sufferers." See:

State Game Wardens Ready to Patrol the River
I happened to be at Clearwater Park at the time when a couple of Oregon's Game Wardens (State Police) were getting ready to patrol the Willamette River and check on fishermen, etc. I asked them about their boat because I heard it as one of them checked it out on the river, and it sounded powerful. They told me that it had a 350 Chevy in it. Lots of power for that boat! It's fast! It also has an outboard motor for shallow water. Here they are just about to pull away.

Greater Yellowlegs on the Hunt for Food
I saw Greater Yellowlegs at Delta Ponds in the spring and early summer. Now I am seeing them here again in the fall. I have a hard time telling the greater from the lesser yellowlegs. But after checking "All About Birds" it appears to me this one is a Greater Yellowlegs, unless someone shows me differently. :)
This is what Wikipedia shows as the Greater Yellowlegs:

Western Pond Turtle
Around the world the turtle is in trouble. But I was happy to read that through efforts such as those by the Oregon Zoo in Portland and the Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife, the population of the Western Pond Turtle in Oregon is rising. I love to see all wildlife in their natural settings.

Look Out Below!
I saw some Bushtits congregating below a bridge at Delta Ponds, where water and flowers were found and some large bushes nearby to hide in. They seemed to like this spot. I stood there for a while till they got comfortable with my presence. Then I shot pictures as they moved quickly to the rocks and water and just as quickly flew back to the safety of the bush. It was fun to watch them, though they are pretty small birds for my eyes. I got this shot of one coming in for a landing with two others in the landing zone. No mishaps to report!

Aging Gracefully
This beautiful flower, aging gracefully as we move into October, was part of a lovely yard along the Riverbank Trail, north of Delta Ponds. Wish that was happening to me. LOL Of course, the glory of a flower lasts only a year, while we humans can build a life's record over decades of living. May we do it with grace and dignity.

The Big Eye!
I saw this skipper butterfly in tough mixed light and tried a shot, hoping to get detail in both highlights and shadow. I love the photo because of that big eye and the long black tongue hiding in the flower, which I believe belongs to a thistle.

European Starling - Actually Quite Beautiful
I saw this beauty at Alton Baker Park.
Did you know that European Starlings were first brought to North America by Shakespeare enthusiasts in the Nineteenth Century? It's true!
I learned some fascinating facts about birds online at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, All About Birds - "Though they’re sometimes resented for their abundance and aggressiveness, they’re still dazzling birds when you get a good look. Covered in white spots during winter, they turn dark and glossy in summer."

Delta Ponds Scene
This scene shows one reason why I love Delta Ponds. Eugene Parks has done a great job restoring this area as a park for our enjoyment. One always sees quite a few people taking walks, bird watching, or just relaxing in the pleasant surroundings. Two of my very favorite people with Eugene Parks and Open Space are Carrie and Kelly! But the whole staff is tops!

Egret Pond Ballet
You have no doubt heard of the 'Swan Lake Ballet', a beautifully performed classic ballet. Well, here we have the Egret Pond Ballet, just as beautiful, and impressively performed without music. The performance was given at Delta Ponds this morning.

Early Morning Coffee
I woke up early this morning and decided to go out for some dawn photos. Here is one of them for all those, like me, who need a cup of coffee to start the day.
Sorry, it isn't open yet! :). And I had my coffee before leaving home!

Watching the Sunrise on Kelly Butte
Kelly Butte lies not far from downtown Springfield, OR. It has an elevation of 495 feet. There are streets that take one to the top, where a park and overlook are located. I went there to watch the sun rise over the Cascade Mountains that lie less than one hundred miles to the east of Springfield. It was a pretty sight!

I found this flower, photographed in September, to be delightful! I love pink, so this one stood out to me. I hope it pleases you too!

Waterfall at Jasper, Oregon
There is a small waterfall at Jasper, Oregon where Hills Creek flows into the Willamette River. In the winter and spring the falls cover all of the rocks in the streambed. This has been an especially dry summer and fall, so the water flow is small. This is the waterfall that remains. It's pretty, even though it isn't very big.

Trail Through the Trees
This is an old orchard in Alton Baker Park. The jogging trail runs through it and the overhanging trees turn it into a trail with a canopy. It's a nice place for a photo walk.

Expert Fisherman
I watched from a bridge at Delta Ponds this morning as a Great Egret fished in the pond below. While I stood there it caught four fish, so it ate well. It amazes me that fish are found in this pond as water from the river has to go through three ponds before it gets to this one. But the fish are there. I saw the egret, I guess it was the same one, there last week. Perhaps some fish are planted there, but I haven't seen that happen. Anyway, it was a treat to see this egret. When I first saw it, it was on the railing of the footbridge. Then it flew down to the pond below and began looking for food. I moved out onto the bridge and got some nice shots of the action.

Those Wonderful Wood Ducks
The Wood Ducks are visiting Delta Ponds now. I just love them, with their bright colors and interesting appearance!
Information from Wikipedia about the Wood Duck:
"The wood duck or Carolina duck is a species of perching duck found in North America. It is one of the most colorful North American waterfowl. The wood duck is a medium-sized perching duck. A typical adult is from 47 to 54 cm in length with a wingspan of between 66 to 73 cm. This is about three-quarters of the length of an adult mallard. It shares its genus with the Asian Mandarin duck."
18-OCT-2015
Elegant Egret
I love to see Great Egrets in flight. Their wingspan of six feet is impressive and their grace in flight is beautiful. This egret taking flight to move one pond to another was seen at Delta Ponds. I thought the pretty yellow flowers really added to the wonderful scene!

Converted Half-track Army Truck
After World War 2, I recall seeing surplus military equipment being purchased and converted to civilian use, even though I was a young boy at the time. This old half-track army truck had been converted for use in local logging operations. It has now been sitting along Jasper/Lowell Road for a long time.

Around the Bend
For this shot, I am standing at one end of this bridge over Jasper/Lowell Road so that I can record the curve in the rail line as it heads toward another bridge over the Willamette River, ahead in the fog. No, I wasn't in any danger, I was using the Nikkor 28-300 at 170mm. But I probably shouldn't have been there. :)

Fall Colors Along the Willamette River
The wonderful Willamette River is a key feature of the area where I live. Here the famous McKenzie River flows into the Willamette. So we are blessed with two most beautiful Rivers and so many photogenic scenes along both. This lovely fall scene, on a foggy morning, is where the Willamette passes by Clearwater Park in Springfield.

My Twin
I would like to introduce you to my twin. Well, actually we were born the same year. This is a 1936 Ford Coupe. Have to admit that it looks a lot better than I do. But I am sure we both have been through major overhauls along the way, much of it in recent years for me. And we both have a lot of miles on us.
I just love this car, and its great paint job, even though it never had that color when new. The interior is yet to be upholstered but, other than that, it looks pretty much restored. I don't know that I can say that about myself. Back when I was a young guy, my dream was to have one of these in a convertible, with that great rumble seat, Wow! I only wish I owned this one!

The Sunshine of My Life
I thought I would try to brighten your day by posting this sunflower, with the bee at the very heart of things.
For some reason, it made me think of the song, "The Sunshine of My Life", by Stevie Wonder. So I played it.

Into The Morning Spotlight
Over at Delta Ponds I watched this Great Egret as it hunted along the opposite side of a pond. I saw this patch of bright golden sunlight and waited for the egret to come out into the light. Using the Vivid setting in the camera I was able to add contrast between the light area and the dark background in the rest of the scene, all the time working to get the white of the egret properly exposed. I was pleased with the result.

Confrontation!
It was great fun to capture this confrontation between a Great Blue Heron and Great Egret, at Delta Ponds. The herons seem to be quite territorial about the ponds and often chase the egrets off. That happened here after the encounter, the egret flew off to another pond.

Ichthyology -The Study of Fish
Carol called my attention to the way the sunlight through the window was lighting her glass 'fish in a vase'! So I moved a little glass girl over so that it looks like she is studying the fish. :)
"Ichthyology (from Greek: ἰ÷èýò, ikhthus, "fish"; and ëüãïò, logos, "study"), also known as Fish Science, is the branch of biology devoted to the study of fish." (Wikipedia) Learning is fun, whether it is the study of fish, other wonders of creation or the answers to questions that puzzle us. Never stop learning!

Pretty in the Ponds
I had a nice walk at Delta Ponds this morning and got some nice shots, even though I had to really scout for the wildlife. I loved this shot with the unusual shade of green of the vegetation and the golden light on the pond, all making the beautiful egret stand out. Yes, another egret photo. I have lots of them. LOL
28-OCT-2015
Low Cloud Nestled in the Coburg Hills
Took a drive out in the Mohawk Valley (yes, Oregon has a Mohawk Valley). I was attracted to the cloud laying low in the Coburg Hills and thought it would make a nice photo. There is a hint of fall colors there, but the trees are mostly Douglas Fir.

Kat at the Ponds
I met the nicest young lady at Delta Ponds today. I had to go to Valley River Center to have new lenses put in my glasses and decided to take a walk while I waited. While there I met a great young lady, Kathryn (Kat), who was there for her studies at the University of Oregon. We had a nice visit and observed several different kinds of birds there. I often forget to photograph those I meet. This time I remembered. It was a pleasure to meet you, Kat!

Fall Colors in Delta Ponds
It rained on me today when I visited Delta Ponds, but that didn't dampen my spirits! I did get some light for this photo. I really enjoy my walks there. Beside the wildlife one can see, there are beautiful scenes to enjoy, like this!

Red Shafted Northern Flicker
I visited Jasper Park this afternoon to check on fall colors there. Some of the trees were losing their leaves in the breeze, so it is a bit late now to see the colors at their best. But I saw plenty of color in this beautiful Flicker. The Red Shafted Northern Flicker is the more common seen in Oregon. One of them showed up in our backyard a while back. I am fond of this gorgeous bird and was happy to see this one.

Stop! The Trail Ends Here!
I sometimes follow a path along the Willamette River at Clearwater Park. The path is primitive, just a trail worn by the steps of others who also take the path. But the trail ends here! If one were to continue straight ahead they would end up in the river! A person can continue if they cling to the right, hanging onto branches of trees. I have done that, but it's best to stop here!

Hey, Watch Your Beak!
Oops, I was corrected (thanks to Jim and Mats)! I was thinking that this is a group of Greater Yellowlegs, but they are Long-billed Dowitchers, seen at Delta Ponds. Those long bills are good for digging out bugs and other food along the shoreline. But it seems they would always be getting in the way! :)

I Am Still on the Fence About Fall!
I guess I haven't given up on nice summer-like weather, a good motivator when it comes to photography. As a result, I am still, on the fence about Fall. Oh well, we are well into it now! It's getting colder and the skies are getting darker and gray. But there still are photo opportunities out there. We just have to look for them.

Rosboro Lumber Cold Deck
We see such cold decks of logs around the area, at mills and storage lots.

Surprise Package
I made a brief visit to Clearwater Park today to try to capture some of the remaining fall colors. As I was composing a shot of a mountain draped with fog, a Dark-eyed Junco landed on a fence post in front of me, to my pleasant surprise. Naturally, I quickly lost interest in the mountain and began to shoot a few pictures of the Junco. This is one of them.

Extreme Backlight
At times, it is good to play with the qualities of light, such as its direction. Here, intensifying high contrast by seeking a dark background (a shaded area) made the spots of color pop, and creates a more pleasing image (to me anyway) than just an ordinary shot of this weed.
The only thing I would like to change is to fill more of the left side of the frame with the plant, but I had already finished with it and didn't feel like going back. So you get it the way it is! :)
07-NOV-2015
Tiny Visitor on Mushroom
Had a nice walk at Clearwater Park and enjoyed the fall colors. As the trail wandered through the woods near the Willamette River, I came across a dead tree lying on the ground. There was what appeared to be a mushroom growing out of the tree, and on that growth there was a little visitor. I am not sure what the insect was (perhaps some kind of fly), but to me it added a spot of interest.

Doggie in the Dark
Let me tell you, the bedroom was dark! I noticed the stuffed dog, that I had got Carol when she was in the hospital a few years ago, lying on the bed. The way light from another room hit the dog's face grabbed my attention. So I just had to try a shot. If you check the Tech Notes, you will note that the camera was handheld at 1/3rd of a second. I do have a pretty steady hand! The result turned out to be just what I wanted.

Oregon Junco Testing The Water!
It was a cool morning at Delta Ponds. It almost looked like this Oregon Junco was taking time to test the water before taking a bath. I have seen them during the last few visits. They winter in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere.

Stretching is Good For You!
This Great Egret, seen at Delta Ponds, seems to know how beneficial stretching is! It sure knows how to do it!

A Heron in the Rain
I paid a short visit to Delta Ponds today. But it was raining, so I went back to the car in pretty short order. I pulled over to a spot where I could view one pond from the car and shot some pictures of this Great Blue Heron on a huge stump of an old tree. Since the stump looked interesting and unique, it seemed to make a good prop for the heron. The grass in the background contributed to the scene. I thought it made for a pleasing image.

You Don't Bring Me Flowers
How would you feel to be given these flowers? Flowers can mean so much! And sometimes we husbands forget such things. The flowers brought to mind the song by Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond.
I think I will buy Carol some flowers tomorrow.
13-NOV-2015
Soft Touch
I had to go out to the Post Office late this afternoon, and took my camera along. When I went past a car wash, I saw this and had to grab a shot. It's probably in the midst of the rinse cycle. That would explain the mist surrounding the car. Anyway, I like the result.

The Northern Shoveler's Remarkable Bill
I was pleased to get this image of a male Northern Shoveler. That wide-ended bill is quite unique and impressive! My Birds of Oregon book says that they are 'generally common winter residents throughout Oregon.' That explains why I am seeing them now.
"You can't fail to be impressed by the Northern Shoveler's remarkable bill. Its broad, spatulate shape and the hair like ridges that line in allow this duck to sift small water plants and invertebrates from the surface of still waters, where it is by far the most common duck. Shovelers eat much smaller organisms than do most waterfowl, and their digestive systems are elongated to prolong the digestion of these hard-bodied invertebrates." (Birds of Oregon)
In a world gone mad, wildlife remains a constant pleasure, for me at least. I find the wonders of creation very humbling. We can learn much from the beauty and balance seen in the natural world.

Dancing in the Dark
It was getting dark when I was out for a walk in the park. I thought that these two trees, bathed in light from the parking lot, looked like they were dancing in the dark. Remember, I told you I have a good imagination. :)

Oscar Mayer Wienermobile
I am glad I decided to drive over to Eugene to look around this morning. On the way over there this is what I saw. I just had to stop and get a photo or two. I have seen this vehicle on TV but never in real life. It is possible they could be in Eugene for the football game on Saturday.

Nobody's Pigeon
I found background information on the Feral Pigeon (from the wild Rock Dove) to be quite interesting. It seems that is what we have most of in Oregon. Here is what Wikipedia says about them:
"Feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica), also called city doves, city pigeons, or street pigeons, are derived from domestic pigeons that have returned to the wild.[2] The domestic pigeon was originally bred from the wild rock dove, which naturally inhabits sea-cliffs and mountains.[3] Rock (i.e., 'wild'), domestic, and feral pigeons are all the same species and will readily interbreed. Feral pigeons find the ledges of buildings to be a substitute for sea cliffs, have become adapted to urban life, and are abundant in towns and cities throughout much of the world.[4]" Other information here:

Raindrops on Leaf
A walk around the neighborhood can be always a treat if we look closely for good subjects. When it's raining that is no less so. I saw this leaf beautifully covered with raindrops and found it to be a pure delight! Because this is a close up shot, it has limited DOF. That accounts for the upper left part of the leaf being out of focus.

Fall Scene in Mohawk Valley
I remember a photo I shot of this barn a few years ago. The trees and ground were covered with snow. The old barn looked about the same, but one could see more of it. Those five or six trees in front were not there! It is amazing how quickly they get to that size! Anyway, now I have the barn pictured in fall and winter. I guess I might as well do spring and summer while I am at it. What do you think? :)

This must be Mt. Cabela!
I took Carol to Cabela's today to check on walking sticks. The store is full of stuffed animals that look very realistic. This scene graced one wall. It's not often you get to photograph these animals together like this. :)
21-NOV-2015
Plump Little Female Robin
I saw this cute little robin among the branches of a bush at Delta Ponds. It looks like it is ready for winter with that round body. It must have felt it was well hidden in that bush, because I was able to zoom in on it and shoot some pictures. It didn't seem in a hurry to fly off, like they usually do. I was grateful that it posed for me.

A Break in the Weather
While I was at Delta Ponds, the sun broke through the dark sky and bathed the trees in golden light. It was a beautiful sight to see and I got some pretty images. The Great Egret seems to be enjoying it too!
23-NOV-2015
Green-winged Teal
This small, speedy Green-winged Teal is a current visitor to Delta Ponds. Being so skittish, it was difficult to get into position where I could get some photographs. Finding a spot behind some trees and bushes helped to camouflage me and I was able to get several nice shots. Here it looks almost like it has chubby cheeks.
According to my 'Birds of Oregon' book, "the name 'teal' is applied to 16 of the world's smallest waterfowl, of which the Green-winged Teal is the best known. This widespread bird exemplifies the diminutive build, speedy flight and small habitat requirements of teals."

Mink Across the Pond
I saw this American Mink across the pond from me, so it was some distance away. I tried to bring it up as much as I could but it is still small in the picture, and the picture is not the best quality. But I was still thrilled because it is the only mink I have ever photographed. And it is the first one I have seen at Delta Ponds.
Here is some information about the American Mink:

A Bit of Snow in the Coburg Hills
It was quite cold here this morning, down into the twenties. Since we had rain last night, that created the possibility of spots of ice on the roads this morning. And we got some snow in the surrounding hills. This is a photo of the Coburg Hills with Delta Ponds in the foreground. We still have some nice colors.

Take a Flying Leap!
As I approached a bridge at Delta Ponds, a Great Egret jumped from one railing to the other, right there in front of me! Fortunately, I was quick to react and caught it in the act. Too often, I am a day late and a dollar short! :) From there, the heron took another jump to the water below the bridge. I watched it there as it caught some fish. I will post one of those at another time.

A Bit of Frost
It got down into the 20's this morning here, and it was clear. This made for a little bit of frost on everything, including this fence and the grass below it. I thought it made a pleasing image.

Intricate Weaving!
Those spiders, with their tiny brains, are such master builders, in some ways putting us mighty humans to shame. Doesn't this make you wonder? The marvels of nature, charged with so much design and order, fill me with awe! And I love the detail and complexity of spider webs!

Horizon Airlines Bombardier Q400
I got this shot of this Horizon Airlines Bombardier Q400 as it flew over Delta Ponds, after leaving the Eugene Airport. This turbo prop passenger plane seems to be popular with several airlines, such as Horizon, Transport Canada and Alaska.

Posing in the Spotlight
We have three types of cormorants that frequent Oregon. The most common of these is the Double-crested Cormorant. I see how some of them got this name, but seldom see the crest on most of them. This pair in Delta Ponds is typical. I really liked the lighting on the birds, as I was there at just the right time.

Some Sun on a Foggy Morning in Delta Ponds
To me, a scene containing fog as one of the elements is enriched by it. I thought the foggy background in this colorful scene at Delta Ponds gives it an extra dimension. I think it helps the sunshine and colors to stand out as they do.

Portrait of a Leaf
This composition greeted me as I explored Alton Baker Park today. I was very pleased with the result.

Belted Kingfisher on a Stump
I was surprised to see this Kingfisher in plain sight on top of an old dead stump in Delta Ponds! They are so elusive! They won't let you get close and are often gone before a person even notices them. But I was as close as I have ever been to this one. And the zoom lens brought him up close and personal. It was a good morning!

A Focused Photographer
I saw this photographer on a bridge in Delta Ponds watching a Great Egret fishing below the bridge. I slowly made my way to the bridge and had a nice visit with him, besides getting some nice photos of the egret. Next time I have to get his name!

Haughty Heron
We are having dark cloudy days and rain the last few days. But the weather doesn't keep the birds from their daily activity. I watched as two Great Blue Herons postured and pranced, in dispute over an area of the ponds. This heron just moved away from conflict as the other approached, bristled for action. Even though it retreated, it still shows a haughty attitude. I love its pose!

The Stream at Clearwater Park
Another excursion to Clearwater Park got me this view of the stream that is diverted from the Willamette River to flow through part of the park. It can make for nice landscape scenes, such as this one, warmed by the light of the morning sun.

Amazing Artwork
Anyone who sees the back of this pickup needs to pay close attention to their driving and not get focused in on the amazing artwork. I think the artist has done fine work on this. It reminds me of a Montana mountain scene. Can be seen on the streets of Springfield.

The Beautifully Colored Spotted Towhee
This beautiful Spotted Towhee was seen at Clearwater Park. I think they are such attractive birds!

Light Does Funny Things to a Leaf!
This colorful leaf was sunlit on the bottom half and backlit (or sidelight) on the top half, making for a quite unusual appearance. It jumped out at me visually, so I just had to photograph it!

Positively Pretty Pampas Grass
This Pampas Grass is in Alton Baker Park. Here the morning sun was shining on the on the flowers and gave them a golden tone. I thought the red bush in the background set the flowers off well.
"Cortaderia selloana, commonly known as pampas grass, is a flowering plant native to southern South America, including the Pampas after which it is named. It is a tall grass, growing in dense tussocks that can reach a height of 3 m. The leaves are long and slender, 1–2 m long, and 1 cm broad, with very sharp edges. The leaves are usually bluish-green, but can be silvery grey. The flowers are produced in a dense white panicle 20–40 cm long on a 2–3 m tall stem."

A Truly 'Great Egret'
This egret was scouting for food at Delta Ponds. I got some pictures during a little break in the rain. We have had some real storms lately, with high wind damage. More is coming this weekend. Today the ponds were running high, with water rushing in from the Willamette River. Most of the birds have left for cover.

A Pleasant Surprise
Green Herons often visit the area in the spring and early summer. And they are usually long gone by now. So you can imagine my pleasant surprise when I saw one in a tree overlooking one of the Delta Ponds. The light hit its back just right to bring out the green, which hasn't been that obvious to me before. But my 'Birds of Oregon' book says the Green Heron is "iridescent green on its back and wings." When I have photographed them previously, in sunlight at the ponds, I often wondered where they got their name. I guess I haven't really got a good view of the back before. In this shot one can't see the bird's red chest, the neck and front are a bit underexposed.
Interestingly, I wandered on down to another part of that pond and saw a couple who were looking for birds. I told them about the heron. They had never seen a Green Heron, so I took them back to where the bird was. It stayed still just long enough for them to see it, and then flew off. It had stayed still for me for a while, all the time I was getting pictures of it. I guess two more made a crowd. :)

Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood)
This is a Dawn Redwood in Hays Tree Garden, a feature of Alton Baker Park. It's a beautiful spot any time of year.

Bison-Ten-Yal Ranch
This ranch is on Fir Butte Road just west of Eugene. I thought the name is unique and catchy. You can guess what they raise there! :) I think the bison statue is well done. However, on a very wet day it was a bit too shiny, which made for a difficult shot. I had to shoot from the car also, because of the rain. But you get the idea!

Muskrat at Delta Ponds
Here is another of the creatures found at Delta Ponds, a muskrat sitting on a log and feeding. They are definitely cuter, and smaller, than the Nutria, which have also made their appearance there.

Good Weather for a Bath
We are expecting several days of rain and the rivers are full already. There are puddles of water everywhere, such as this one in Alton Baker Park, where this Robin enjoyed taking a bath. I would say it is all fattened up for the winter.

Wood Duck on wood, for the moment!
This is a little series of shots, starting with the wood duck on the log, then in midair as it jumps to the water, finally as it makes a splash!

Red-Shouldered Hawk
I saw this hawk in a tree In Delta Ponds. The tree was alongside Goodpasture Road. It stayed long enough for me to get some nice shots of it, before it flew down to the edge of the pond. I am sure it is a Red-Shouldered Hawk, it matches perfectly the picture in my "Birds of Oregon" book. Interestingly, its eye in this shot has a bluish tint. I don't know why, perhaps the way the light was reflecting in it. I am always looking to get a good shot of hawks but rarely do they stay put long enough for me to do that. I am grateful this one posed for me.

Mt Zion, near Dexter, Oregon.
Mt Zion is a 2,612 foot peak located near Dexter, Oregon. It is tall enough to be a landmark in the area. As can be seen from the cleared area, they are logging on the mountain. I shot this photo of it from Lost Creek Road. We had some nice sunshine and blue sky today, which helped to beautify the scene.

Black -capped Chickadee, I think!
I believe this little beauty that I saw at Delta Ponds is a Black-capped Chickadee. The one in my 'Birds of Oregon' book doesn't show the grey band around its middle, but otherwise it looks like it. Photos I found in a search didn't show the grey band either -

Maybe it is wearing a skirt. :)

Rainbow Over Delta Ponds
We had a bit of everything today, rain, high wind, sunshine and a beautiful rainbow. The sun didn't last. I got just a bit wet and my hat blew off once. But it was worth it for the photos I got, including the rainbow over the ponds.

Look What I Ran Into on My Walk
One never knows what they might run into on a photo walk. I saw this octopus mural on a wall downtown and thought it was pretty neat! So I shot it! :)

Thistle Down Farm
This is a farm located not far from where I lived during my high school years. It remains a busy farm with a farmer's market at this location. That old barn is still in great condition.

A Bird With a Bib!
The beautiful Red-shafted Northern Flicker is found mostly in the Western US. It seems to be more easily seen in our area at this time of year, perhaps migrating here from farther north. I read that it is unique among woodpeckers in that some do migrate. It belongs to the woodpecker family. It is a large and colorful bird, about 12-14 inches long, head to tip of tail. I just love to see them, being one of my favorites. That black patch on its chest looks like a bib to me. This one was photographed at Delta Ponds.

High Water Mark
Recent rains have raised water levels to the point of flooding in some areas. In this scene at Delta Ponds, all but the tops of these plants is under water. It is beginning to change, and we had a bit of sun and rain today. For the most part I stayed in, though I did take a long walk this morning, and I enjoyed the quiet out there. With so many at home enjoying the holiday with their families, it made for not much traffic. So the streets were pretty empty, which makes crossing streets easier, and safer. :) But it's going to be cold tonight.

'Water Over the Dam' (A Metaphor)
The water coming through the spillway at Leaburg Dam looked a bit wild. We have had a lot of rain. It called to mind the idiom, "water over the dam", which has the same meaning as "water under the bridge."
Here is quote from The Free Dictionary, by Farlex - "WATER OVER THE DAM"
"Also, water under the bridge. Something that is over and done with, especially an unfortunate occurrence. For example, Last year's problems with delivery are water over the dam, or Never mind that old quarrel; that's water under the bridge. These metaphoric phrases allude to water that has flowed over a spillway or under a bridge and thus is gone forever. The first term was first recorded in 1797; the variant dates from the late 1800s." This scene of the beautiful McKenzie River was made from a bridge at Finn Rock. I enjoyed a nice drive along the river.

A "Team" of Ring-necked Ducks!
What do you call a group of ducks, like this group of Ring-necked Ducks I saw in Delta Ponds? According to 'WhatBird.com', "A group of ducks has many collective nouns, including a "brace", "flush", "paddling", "raft", and "team" of ducks."
Here in Oregon it is fitting to call them a "team" of ducks! Don't believe me? Ask the University of Oregon Ducks! :)
I have never really seen the ring around the neck on these 'Ring-necked Ducks, but have been assured that it is there! WhatBird.com says this about them: "This species might better be called the "Ring-billed Duck," for its chestnut neck ring is usually seen only at close range, while the white ring on the bill can be a prominent field mark."

Reach Out and Touch the Moon!
I thought I would try a shot of the moon with a Nikon P900 and its 83x zoom. I didn't use a tripod, instead braced myself against the top of the car. It looks almost close enough to touch! I thought the camera did pretty well considering the small sensor.

Green-winged Teal
The Green-winged Teal is, to me, one of the prettiest and most colorful ducks, along with the amazing Wood Duck. The Teals are smaller and can be quite fast, in the air and in the water.
It is good to see that US population of green-winged teal populations has grown steadily since the early 1960's when there was an all-time low number of 722,000 was reported. By 2009, they reached an all-time high of 3.4 million, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

2015 About to Run Out
I can't believe that this year has gone by so fast! Seems like only yesterday it got off to its start. This shot I made under 30th Av in Eugene makes me think about the year passing by. :)
