American Coot (Mud Hen)

Springfield, Oregon, US

"It's large clumsy feet have lobes or scallaps for swimming. They are not webbed like a duck. It is awkward on land. It eats mostly water plants, and dives for them among the reeds. The expression, 'silly as a coot' seems to come from the bird's clumsiness on land, and the gawky appearance due to its large white bill." - (The World Book Encyclopedia)

My wife calls them Popcorn Birds because of the sound they make.
