Three Fingered Jack, in The Oregon Cascades

"Three Fingered Jack is located in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness and is not accessible by paved road, but can be approached by the Pacific Crest Trail. It is regarded as extinct and has not been assessed for volcanic hazards." (Wikipedia) The mountain elevation is 7,844 ft. Note: not a pano. :)

Absolutely a gorgeous shot! I love the crisp snowy peaks, the soft clouds against the blue sky and the texture that the bare trees in the foreground give. This is a framer!

My understanding of this mountain is that what remains as the magma "core" of the volcano. This is harder material than the crust and ash that made up the conical exterior. This softer material eventually eroded away leaving the core. This is why Three Fingered Jack is so rugged in appearance. I have been doing volunteer photography work at the Cascades Volcano Observatory (now closed during the government shutdown - so we're not monitoring Mt. St. Helens right now - thank you Congress) and i have been learning more just by being in the company of the geo-scientists that work there.

Great photo - looks like the snow season is under way!
