What Bird? - Black Tern

D3-060611-067

I saw this bird skimming the water for insects in the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area. For other views of the same bird, see the photos in this gallery - http://www.pbase.com/fotabug/060611frwa It was skimming along with a mature black tern.

NOTE: I checked with a local Audubon board member about the identity of the bird. It's a black tern. Thanks Jim.

Black Tern, Chlidonias niger, common at Fern Ridge during breeding season.

Great catch. I love the focus. It shows the water dance going on in the back ground, while retaining the waters definition in mid ground around the subject.

Good shot, But I don't think it is a tern.

It does seem to be turning... :-)

Not a tern, they all have split tails. Maybe some kind of Plover?

Not sure what kind of bird it is Vern but wouldn't have said it is a Tern. Great capture though, love the wing reflection.

I don't think Tern either - the tail would be shaped differently. The Franklin's Gull is as good a guess as any, although the tail looks too dark to me. Very hard to tell from just one photo - also without leg or feet color. It is a very nice shot though, Vern. ;)

I don't think it is a tern, the wings look wrong. How about a juvi Franklin's Gull?
