A 150 years old village on Lamma Island, only a short boat ride from the southern tip of Hong Kong's main island. You may have passed by it without noticing its beauty - a cluster of fallen stone houses, mostly abandoned, but some being restored and are rented to nature lovers who have shied away from city living. A small community strives here with an interesting mix of village folks and new comers who live harmoniously together, utilizing small patches of land here and there for organic farming. Thanks to Ophelia who showed us around one sunny afternoon, we saw the possibility of sustaining an alternate life style in a densely populated city such as Hong Kong. This last frontier is now threatened by real estate developers who have been snapping up the village houses and are waiting for the opportunity to redevelop the land into a modern estate. We cannot help but ask: Where is our government with all the talk of preserving historical heritage? Are these beauties not worth preserving?
