On Top, Storm Rolling In

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

The Dunes lie in a high valley surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks of the Sangre de Cristo range.
Air around the peaks is notoriously unstable; weather has a habit of appearing and disappearing mysteriously.

When this group started up the face of the dunes it was likely hot, sunny and cloudless.
But by three o'clock isolated thunderstorms formed above the San Luis Valley,
and by four it was a general melee across a forty-mile front.

Those people were up there to do some sand sledding.

Super shot Larry, such beautiful smooth shapes, and beautiful light. I guess the dunes move with the winds?

Wow, I love the lighting and how smooth the sand looks! And you know what they say about Colorado, if you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes, haha Great image, I'm really going to have to go visit the Sand Dunes one of these times I go back to CO...

Beautiful image Larry, it was 16 years ago yesterday that we flew into Alamosa and then went up to Monta Vista and then to the north fork of Rock creek... we had snow on Bennett Peak. we saw it all day but the next day it was gone... and so were the elk.
