According to a number of sources (e.g.,http://www.mysteriousaustralia.com/our_own_nessie.html), Lake Taupo may have a colony of prehistoric Plesiosaurus-type creatures living in it, called the Taniwahs by the Maoris. Looking at this beautiful gallery, I think this 40-km-long lake may well be a really good place to stay since prehistoric times! V.
