Newton-Clark Ridge, 2005 07 (Jul) 24

Mt. Hood, Oregon, U.S.A. The first three miles of this hike go through a pretty boring forest hike, then it springs above timberline and you walk through a procession of picturesque, ghost Whitebark Pines. On the right is Gnarl Ridge, which I used to hike up all the time but can't anymore because I can't get across raging Newton Creek, which used to have a wooden bridge across it but it was swept away several years ago, twice in two years, and the Forest Service just gave up on it. So I crawl up the ridge between Newton and Clark Creeks. There is no trail up this ridge, but I've been doing it for years. It gets harder every year and if I didn't now have a D2x, I wouldn't go through the grueling effort to get up the ridge. It's just too hard these days, but I wanted to photograph it one last time with probably the best camera I'll ever own.
