2006 Solar Eclipse Chromosphere

El Sallum, Egypt

A few seconds after the second contact diamond ring, the Sun's chromosphere becomes visible, so named because of its vivid color when seen at a solar eclipse. The chromosphere is a relatively cool layer just above the Sun's white-light-emitting photosphere. It glows with the distinctive red light of hydrogen-alpha emission. Solar flares can also be seen.
