In late July - early August 2008 we explored the historical and cultural sites of China's ancient Silk Road and experienced the total solar eclipse of the sun from the Gobi Desert. The trip was sponsored by Sky & Telescope magazine and TravelQuest International. We started the trip with our private tour of Shanghai and Beijing, and then joined the tour starting in Urumqi located in the far North West of China in Xinjiang Province. From there, we worked our way back east, first by bus, then train, to the historic city of Xian in Shaanxi Province.
