Puerto Montt & Puerto Varas

The German-founded Puerto Montt is the fastest growing city in Chile. 1000km south of Santiago, it is a jumping-off point for journeys to Patagnoia. Puerto Montt sits on a bay which opens into the Pacific. Salmon-farming is big business due to large and unpolluted open water. A visit to the Fish Market was the highlight of the day. Puerto Varas, known as the City of Roses, is a famous vacation area 30 minutes north. Puerto Varas is not on the ocean, but on Lago Llanquihue, one of the largest lakes in South America. We stayed in Puerto Varas on all three occasions.
