2010 World Expo

Despite warnings from friends and family who have been there and who haven't, we spent the entire day at the expo. It was part sunny at 33°C (~ 92°F) with a humidity probably up in the 90%, we were two of the nearly 300,000 visitors of the day, way below 1,000,000+ people peaked in one mid October day. The crowds were thick as porridge!

The theme of the event is Better City, Better Life, with about 240 countries and organizations reportedly participate the Expo. The event that lasts from May 1 - Oct 31 is expected to draw about 70 million audience, mostly Chinese, mostly sponsored by the government one way or another. It is extremely well organized, all the places are clean and spotless. There are clean energy buses and carts moving those who are too tired to walk. There are fixed umbrellas and shades built everywhere, yet the demand exceeds supplies, especially in popular spots.

Many people came prepared with food and water, fruit, folding stool, umbrella and hand fan, in anticipation of the rumored long wait at some pavilions. The wait ranges from from 4 - 6 hours. Even VIP tickets require a couple of hours wait. As you can see, we only managed to go through less popular pavilions and missed all considered the "best" countries. Handicaps and people over 70 years old used to be able to skip the lines, but there was so much abuse of the system, the privilege was quickly removed and one has to be at least 75 to skip the crowd. Attending the event requires a lot of patience, stamina and curiosity for one to willingly experience some called "misery".

Another major attraction is stamping on the Expo passport. Many people are hired to go from one pavilion after another just to get stamps on the booklet. Even more people come with a dozen of them on hand. Staffs from most countries either eliminate the stamping service, or provide seals and let people stamp themselves. Expect to see these stamped passports on sale for a profits.

Due to heat, we managed to survive the day by drinking water and having plenty of ice creams. We ended the day by taking a cruise that travels on the Huangpu River, with the Expo buildings lit up on one side and the new and old landmarks in the Pudong area on the other.
