Silver City a Ghost Town

In 1863 huge gold and silver deposits were discovered in the Owyhee Mountains and hundreds of mining claims were made. Thousands flocked to the area seeking their fortunes. Silver City, established in 1864, once had hundreds of buildings including 8 saloons, 6 general stores and a hospital.

Silver City Idaho has a turbulent history. There are stories of shootings between rival mining companies, and men and management. The cemetery is well populated with such men and their stories, which now lie forever, beneath ornate, wrought iron fences.

The town had the first telegraph and first daily newspaper in the territory. In 1880, they had telephones, and by 1890, electricity.
