Ascent of Mount Temple in the Canadian Rockies

Mount Temple is the 3rd highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at approximately 11,000 feet. Roughly triangular in shape, the NW and E faces are true mountaineering climbs, but there is a strenuous 12 hour scramble up the SW face from Moraine Lake via Sentinel Pass that is possible without the use of rope. Proper clothing and footwear, a large scale map and map reading skills are necessary, and an ice axe is recommended although not strictly necessary. Although the trail itself is not particularly dangerous, if you stray off it, it is possible to get into real problems and people have died doing this trip.

Total height gain from Moraine Lake is 5544 feet. (1690 meters)

Park regulations require groups of six because the lower slopes are an active grizzly bear breeding and feeding range. On occasion the area may be completely closed to all human traffic due to the grizzly mating season. The climb is arguably one of the best trips in the Rockies.

My son made the trip with friends in July 2008, these are some of his pictures.

An excellent description of the climb is here http://www.rmbooks.com/books/temple.htm
