Ship on the River

Davis Pond Fresh Water Diversion

I stopped on the bridge over the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion, to look for some wildlife. I didn't find any wildlife but was lucky enough to catch the ship heading up the river. The ship is about 1.5 miles away from me. There are two railroad tracks, a road and a levee in between me and this ship. This diversion project diverts water from the Mississippi River to the swamps to simulate what used to happen before levees in order to help restore/preserve the wetlands. Fresh water is released using control gates and flows through the diversion and into a ponding area, through the swamps and out to the lakes. Here you can see the diversion a little better

You can learn more about the diversion at the Army Corps of Engineers http://www.mvn.usace.army.mil/pao/dpond/davispond.htm

Like this shot - so full of detail. but it's so flat!

this looks like the ship is moving across the fields, not on water! Nice composition.

I love the warm tones and of course, the ship. We try to imitate Mother Nature and repair the damage we do which is good but I wonder if we really can.

Good shot Elaine, I would not have thought you would pick up that much detail at that distance. You caught a train and the ship, the red stack looks like another ship tied up at IMTT on the East Bank.

I took a second look that you photo and noticed that it looks like a double stack train with green containers on it just in front of the ship.

I did not know that this work was going on. Thanks for the info I will have to check it out. Great picture. I have watch the river at the lower 9th ward by the locks, and yes it is high!!

Nice perspective. It makes the ship look as big as a small city.

Wow, the River is really high that this ship is riding so high from where you are shooting. Beautiful shot. Like the brown grass from recent freezes and the new clover sprouting through.

That's really cool, Elaine. Didn't quite understand everything in the article but thanks for posting it.

It took me a while to figure out where you were! You're several miles from the river and on Highway 90? The river is so high that the ships loom over the levee.
