A lot of it is trial and error. You can get some idea by using the exposure the camera suggests. It is measuring through the filter.

Great pics. How do you know how long the shutter needs to be open? My understanding is that you set up the shot without the IR filter, then put the filter on. But how do you know how long the shot needs to be exposed?
The images in this gallery are created using an infrared filter (Hoya R72), they are then manipulated slightly in PhotoShop to emphasize the colors or switch the colors altogether.
