The original Columbia Gorge Highway left Portland and headed east into the scenic area of the Columbia Gorge. The Highway represented one of the earlier applications of cliff-face road building utilizing modern highway construction technologies and is considered the oldest scenic highway in the United States. Vista House, a classic structure in early American Art Deco, was built in 1916-1918 as a memorial to Oregon’s past and as a comfort station for those traveling on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The octagonal stone structure towers 733 feet above the Columbia River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Thus image was captured inside of Vista House showing one of the eight stained glass windows designed to illuminate the ceiling area during the day with a warm summer-like light glow no matter what time of year the traveler visits.
