Orange Hawkweed
(Devils Paintbrush)

Vancouver Island, BC

Orange Hawkweed is a member of the Asteraceae (Sunflower) Family and was introduced from Europe as an
ornamental. Also known as Devil’s Paintbrush.

Orange Hawkweed is highly invasive, and quick spreading. The pollen released from its flowers
releases toxins that inhibit the seed germination, seedling emergence, and growth of surrounding
plants. Infestations can lead to reduced plant and animal diversity as other species are choked out,
as well as diminished agricultural value.

Because of its aggressive growth characteristics, Orange Hawkweed is declared a noxious weed in
British Columbia making it unlawful to transport, propagate and sell. ~ Invasive Species Council of
BC
