Cormorant in Flight

Southern Vancouver Island

Cormorants are medium-to-large, fairly long-necked seabirds, similar to the pelican and gannet. Being legendary birds since prehistoric times, their prey mainly consists of small eels, fish and even water snakes. The name ‘cormorant’ has been derived from the Latin words ‘Corvus Marinus’, which means ‘marine crow’ or ‘sea raven’.
