During spawning hundreds of thousands of salmon make their epic journey from the sea into the rivers and streams on Vancouver Island. Undaunted by rapids, log jams and waterfalls, they return to the place where they hatched four years earlier. The journey ends for these magnificent fish and after spawning they die in the stream where they were born. But the cycle doesn't end there, their carcuses provide food for scavenging birds and mammals, and they return nutrients back into the ecosystem. In time, the eggs hatch, and a new generation of tiny salmon begins the cycle again.
