Northern Flicker

Vancouver Island, BC

This flashy looking woodpecker was just sitting on the top of a tall bush looking over the territory when I saw it. Unlike most other woodpeckers, Northern Flickers are principally ground feeders, though they also forage on tree trunks and limbs. One of their favourite foods is ants and they use their long, barbed tongue to lap up the ants.
