Morning Stretch

Vancouver Island, BC

This female Canvasback was enjoying a leisurely stretch before settling down to the more serious task of hunting for her morning meal. While Canvasbacks usually take new mates each year, pairing in late winter, we weren't able to spot a likely candidate for this lone female. Loss of nesting habitat has caused populations to decline recently and even though the saltwater bays, estuaries and lakes of BC is one of their common wintering sites we haven't seen many around the island this winter.

Excellent shot - The water drop the reflection and the crystal sharpness in the wings. All good.
