UTAH - LONE PEAK WILDERNESS - RED PINE LAKES

This trip was not at all unpleasant although really it should have been. We were in Utah for a family reunion and I didn't have gear for hiking at all as I had no room left in my luggage. No poles, just tennis shoes and not even a backpack. The lack of gear pretty much ruled out Timpanogos which was the one I really wanted to do so instead we headed for Red Pine Lakes. We had little idea of if there would be snow problems at all. In Washington I have a pretty good idea of whether the snow will be melted out in June or July or August or never based on a combination of elevation, East-West orientation, Southerly or Northerly exposure etc. Utah was a different story and we were just hoping there wasn't much snow even though it was only June. To add to the fun I had picked up a cold which set in on this day. We headed up anyway. It was a nice enough hike through forest with trees, aspen and birch which we don't really see in Washington. However as we made it within about a mile or so of the lake the snow became solid and up to about five feet deep along a darker forested area. No exposure and only modest slopes but with just tennis shoes and no poles there was a lot of slipping and sliding and very little progress on the snow. We could have made it in due time but we called it a day because it was going to be a pain to get there and I was already feeling ill enough to take some of the enjoyment out of it. Still, we did get a few views of the Little Cottonwood Canyon are and a nice brief walk in some light woods. The pictures:
