This was a quick trip in September 2004 just to check the views from the North Mountain Lookout. North Mountain is a fairly bland foothill just on the North side of Darrington. The lookout was still standing, unmanned and in decent shape although a bit rickety. The windows appeared as though they all had been broken by vandals. The lookout had some distant views of the North Cascades and the Glacier Peak areas with Whitehorse being the most prominent local peak. Skies were pretty dark even though it was early afternoon with totally overcast skies in the background. The photos:
North Mountain is being decommissioned - the communications tower is being moved to Segelsen Ridge and North Mtn building taken down. Sad in a way, but maybe someday it won't be considered a "dumpster dive" peak - it was a very important and sacred to the indians who lived in the area.
