This lantern was purchased in San Francisco where the shop keeper told us it had come from the Japanese consulate. It appears to be made of brass and is quite heavy. The Japanese consulate story is curious since the characters appear chinese, only if they were Chinese they should be turned 90 degrees. The side candles have a seahorse decoration and a wooden (rosewood) base to the candle.
