2 - Delfts Blauw

B... Blue

Delftware, or Delft pottery, denotes blue and white pottery made in and around Delft in the Netherlands and the tin-glazed pottery made in the Netherlands from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Delftware in the latter sense is a type of pottery in which a white glaze is applied, usually decorated with metal oxides. Delftware includes pottery objects of all descriptions such as plates, ornaments and tiles.

Today, Delfts Blauw (Delft Blue) is the brand name hand painted on the bottom of ceramic pieces identifying them as authentic and collectible. Although most Delft Blue borrows from the tin-glaze tradition, it is nearly all decorated in underglaze blue on a white clay body and very little uses tin glaze, a more expensive product.

Ik ga de heele maand mijn Hollandse probeeren met jou fotos.
Mooi stuukje Delft - het ziet er uit dat het "echt" is en niet dat troep dat je vind die gemaakt is for tourists.

I'm a bit like Maire, we called any blue pottery 'delph', we are all going to be far more knowlegeable after this December. Thanks for sharing that Maaike.

When I was a child we always spoke about washing up the delph, or putting away the delph, or putting the delph on the table. Delph was our word for tableware. Sometimes we might have blue patterned ware, but it didn't matter: anything ceramic, or china was "delph" to us. Good to see an example of the real thing.
