Thanks for these beautiful photographs of the Ethiope. I grew up in Eku; my parents were missionaries and we drove to Abraka to swim often. The river is the spiritual source of my life. I lived in Eku in the 1960s but returned to Abraka and the river in 2003. I wrote a book titled, Gods of Noonday: A White Girl's African Life, and the river is on the cover of the book. I hope to see Abraka and the river again.

Wao! i love this pics. It reminds me of the clean river ethiope and the motels around it. I really miss home. I normally visit the beach for a swim, cruise and listen to the birds. I have never seen such a clean river anywhere else again. Quite diff frm what i see here in England. When nxt u visit Nigeria, pop in to any of these; Gordon, River resort or Mudi beach in Abraka. Its gonna be fun!

Memories Captured! Well done Mr. Jegen and thank you for sharing your pictures with the rest of the world.

Abraka is my hometown. My family is from Oria we have a compound in PO. An untold number of my family members attended College of Education and/or still attending Delta State University. I also attended secondary school in Sapele. At the end of every school session, our first destination is Warri. From Warri, my brothers, sisters and cousins all travel to Abraka. Once in Abraka, the first thing we do is go to the river (urhie) for a swim. I learned how to swim in the river. There is also a bridge on the Abraka-Benin road that crosses the river. I remember going there and jumping from the bridge into the river. What fun we have.

I am now in New Jersey, USA and these pictures bring back a lot of fun memories. Anytime I am home sick, I view these pictures.

These pictures are taken in 2004, I believe, but they are timeless.

Folks.. I visited Abraka river..sometimes ago when I was working around thins ncie and lovely country and I loved it... I was living in Warry when I was 10 years old, and I lived there for 4 years.
My record about Nigeria are still intact, as all those immages, like Abraka, where I've been several time, and where perhaps I got in love for the first time, with a girl called CLAUDIA STROBL, Austrian.
My name is Davide Aliotta.........I hope someone, that lived in the same time in the same place as me......will soon write back.
Nigerians are so friendly and lovely..........further more, even if right now, is not safe to get to Nigeria as tourists, for all fightings, I wish that the population will soon get their right to improve its social conditions and get by this Dictatorial Government all they are asking............

I was just in Nigeria for Holiday and also visited Abraka.
There was nothing to be afraid from! I lived in Benin-City (my husband is born there) and we also went to Abraka by car. No problem at all. I felt save every second! It is beautiful there. And the people are very friendly. Would be happy if all Europeans would only be half so friendly to black people in Europe!!!!!!!!

Oh, what wonderful memories come back! I used to live there too, with my Dad, Mom and 2 year older brother. For about 1.5 years or so, as a 7-8 year old. My Dad worked for Bilfinger and Berger.
Thanks for sharing the pictures, I wish I had some good pictures from back then, because I really enjoyed my time there.

I lived in Nigeria (near Warri) as a child with my parents and brother from 1981-1984. We have also been to Abraka several times. I would love to go there again- now with my daughter, but I think at the moment it is not save in this area in delta state.
These pictures are so wonderful and I remember the great times there.

I grew up as a missionary and lived in Oria-Abraka about 5 miles from there. Would go there 4 to 5 days a week and swim. I am Steve's brother. Great memories and still a wonder to me.

Beautiful - I lived with my parents in Abraka from 1962-1968, I remember swiming in the river and boating up to the origin and floating back to the dock and diving area we built. We lived on a compound with three homes just outside of the village. Thanks for the memories.

wao!very nice!..I certainly remember my dad bringin''me and younger ones here for holiday,was about 5-6yrs then.would see al other children,jus goin around,even on very big bikes,it kind of surprised me then cos I couldnt ride on a big one like that.hearing the lovely language{urohobo}now dats amazing,,cos I couldnt speak nor understand.I stil would com here wheneva I cum to NIG.I miss my home-town a lot.big much!

wow... going waaay back to 1979 - 1982 or somewhere around that those years... Used to be a kid swimming in this river with all the other Dutch expat families... Not at this specific place but at some closeby river fron tpatch that was leased by the construciton company my dad worked for. I wonder what happened to this place due to the troubles in the past decade. Wonderful times here, drinking the water, cooling down in the river, watching the guys from the village nearby dredge for the find silver sand, sleeping overnight on the beaches here and listening to the drums.... It used to be the perfect getaway spot for a kid my age (10-12 years)...
