Some basic astrophoto image processing using GIMP

GIMP is free. Photoshop isn't. Astrophotography can become an (expensive) obsession but it can also be a casual pleasure. Most (i.e., ALL) astrophotos need some gussying up. These steps are a start - the images straight out of the camera are not very impressive. There's enough freeware around to help you get the most enjoyment out of your start in astrophotography, GIMP is part of it.

Thanks for the images but I'm new to gimp and I find it to confusing to follow. some missing steps for me beng unfamiliar.John

Peter - short answer....CTRL-L will open up the Layers panel....long answer - on the image panel, look along the top and click on Windows, then bring the mouse down to 'Dockable dialogs', there's a sizeable selection of options you can click on that will open a panel. Click on 'Layers' and the Layers panel opens up.

I have Gimp 2.6.11 and cannot see or get the small layers menu on the right side of the screen so I am dead in the water. Any clues please. Regards
