The defense is allowed to have one player within three meters of the offensive player with the disc. As long as no other offensive players are nearby, no other defensive players may step into a three meter circle that radiates around the thrower. If a second (or more) defender moves into that space for any reason other than defending another offensive player that intrudes on that space, a "double team" violation occurs. It is the responsibility of the offensive player to recognize this, and say aloud the phrase double team." The defender should then drop two seconds from their stall count. If they last uttered 5, for example, the next count uttered should be 4. Should a double-team occur and be called again, play will stop and the stall count will be reset to zero. The extra time should provide compensation for the amount of time that the double-teamer took from the thrower by blocking legal space that could be thrown to/through. The double-team rule prevents the defense from surrounding the offensive player to such a degree that the offensive player no longer has any passing options. If, however, the defensive players other than the marker maintain at least a 3 meter distance from the thrower, they are following the rules. Double teams do not need to be purposeful to be called. In the above picture, for example, the extra dark players are double(well, triple) teaming the thrower. It looks like those defenders have accidentally collided. They may perhaps be part of a cup that has drawn in too close to the thrower. It is best to call both double-teams and fast counts as naturally as possible. Stopping to acknowledge that a double-team has occurred will just waste time that could be better spent looking downfield. So making this call without interrupting actions as a thrower results in the defense failing to interrupt the offensive flow. |
